Meta Unveils 100-Gram Meta VR Glasses for $1,299 at Meta Connect 2026

Meta debuted its lightweight Meta VR Glasses at Meta Connect 2026, featuring a 100-gram frame powered by a tethered compute puck, micro-OLED displays, and a $1,299 price tag ahead of a spring 2027 release.

Meta platforms took another swing at spatial computing during its annual developers conference, stepping away from the heavy, isolated headsets that have long defined the virtual reality market. The company unveiled a slimmed-down wearable that weighs in at a svelte 100 grams and will retail for $1,299 when it goes on sale in the spring of 2027.

During its annual developer gathering, Meta Connect, the major technology firm showcased a fresh iteration of its virtual reality headsets. Meta VR Glasses carry a price tag of $1,300 while tipping the scales at a trim 100 grams, making them significantly more affordable and lighter than the Apple Vision Pro, which carries a $3,700 price tag and weighs 600 grams. The hardware manufacturer rolled out a $1,299.99 virtual reality gadget weighing 100 grams, a compact Muse Charm designed to interface with its fresh artificial intelligence agent, and a broadened collection of Ray-Ban Meta eyewear. The Meta VR Glasses were revealed on September 23, 2026 at Meta Connect.

Engineering a Svelte Form Factor with External Compute

The engineering breakthrough behind the new hardware lies in offloading the processor and power source. Rather than packing heavy batteries and silicon onto the bridge of the nose, the device houses its displays and sensors in the lightweight frames while shifting the heavy lifting to a tethered puck that slips easily into a pocket or clips to a bag. The device is roughly five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3, a weight reduction that tech influencers on social media hailed as a practical foundation for multi-monitor workstations and wearable media. Social media commentators on X widely discussed the release of Meta’s 100-gram VR Glasses, with numerous personalities describing the featherlight hardware as the precise physical design spatial computing requires to challenge heavier devices like the Apple Vision Pro head-on. According to GlobalData, discussions focused on Meta’s choice to shift the processing unit and battery to an external pocket puck for advanced specifications, which commentators viewed as a calculated push to expand its personal artificial intelligence and hardware ecosystem by pairing wearable spatial technology with its proprietary Muse AI assistant. Shreyasee Majumder, Social Media Analyst at GlobalData, comments: Influencer sentiment on X reflected strong enthusiasm for Meta’s hardware leap.

Inside the lenses, the optical system relies on micro-OLED panels delivering what the company terms a 5K Infinite Display built on micro-OLED panels, while the frames feature Dolby Atmos and the lenses utilize Dolby Vision. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor handles the computing workload. Users control the interface through a combination of voice commands, eye tracking, and hand gestures that allow wearers to keep their hands resting comfortably in their lap rather than making sweeping motions in midair.

Breaking update: By shifting computing and battery duties to an external module, Meta has launched 100-gram VR Glasses priced at $1,299. During a demonstration, it matched up closely with the Apple Vision Pro while coming in at one-sixth of the weight and less than half the cost. They are incredible.

Entertainment Ecosystem and Software Integration

Beyond hardware specifications, the platform aims to capitalize on existing software libraries. The device supports the entire Quest library of thousands of games, alongside approximately 75 titles engineered specifically for hand-gesture control at launch, noting that there will be more than 75 games at launch which can be played.

The operating architecture also introduces a photorealistic hologram feature for video calls, rendering a digital version of the user with real-time expressions and spatial audio placement.

Market Positioning and Consumer Adoption Hurdles

At $1,299, the hardware occupies a curious middle ground in the consumer electronics market.

Alongside the VR glasses, Meta also revealed companion hardware, including the pocket-sized Muse Charm for interacting with its personal AI agent and a new lineup of audio and smart glasses developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica. Whether these interconnected devices can successfully pull users away from their iPhones and anchor them firmly within the ecosystem remains the central question as production ramps up toward next year’s launch. During its presentation at Connect today, Meta revealed Ray-Ban Meta Audio as its inaugural line of audio eyewear and launched its most extensive collection of AI-powered glasses yet via its collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, promising over 100 distinct eyewear selections spanning Meta Glasses, Oakley, and Ray-Ban before the year concludes, featuring comfortable lightweight frames built for continuous daily wear alongside updated models offering extended battery longevity and sleeker profiles.
