Meta unveiled a 100-gram spatial computing headset at Meta Connect 2026 called the Meta VR Glasses. Priced at $1,299.99 USD and slated for a spring 2027 release, the device features a micro-OLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite processing, and IMAX Enhanced certification. At the Meta Connect 2026 reveal, founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg described them as offering a magical feeling of presence and immersion.
Weight Management via an External Puck Design
For years, head-mounted displays struggled with a basic ergonomic penalty: strapping heavy computing hardware and batteries directly to the front of a user’s face. Apple’s Vision Pro demonstrated the potential of spatial computing, but it arrived at $3,699 and roughly the weight of a small house cat after lunch. Meta addressed this mass problem by relocating the core processing, battery, and storage elements into a separate 300-gram puck connected by an optical cable, which Meta says can be clipped to a bag. This design choice brings the Meta VR Glasses down to a mere 100g, making them five times lighter than its Meta Quest 3 headset and around two thirds less than the Apple Vision Pro.
That reduction in facial load matters significantly when considering extended media consumption. The external unit houses Qualcomm’s recently announced Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, which should mean great performance and leading-edge power efficiency, and offers up to three hours of high-resolution media playback. While a cable and compute puck remain part of the equation, your neck may care considerably more about where the weight resides than the marketing department does.

Meta VR Glasses Promise To Put An IMAX Screen
Utilizing micro-OLED technology to achieve 2,412 x 2,288 pixels per eye, the visual framework goes beyond just shedding physical heft, earning the company’s designation of a 5K Infinite Display
. The lenses deliver 37 pixels per degree to eliminate any screen-door effect so text and textures should be sharp. The field of view is 70° horizontal by 66° vertical.
The hardware also supports Dolby Vision and 120Hz for high-frame-rate movies. Built-in frame speakers convey Dolby Atmos sound, which Meta notes will deliver an encompassing spatial audio environment. Bringing in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio for selected titles, it stands out as the initial VR hardware to earn this accreditation, setting up a personal theater setting without needing massive televisions or projection screens.
Content Ecosystem and Immersive Media Partnerships
Entertainment forms the core pillar of the launch strategy rather than productivity, with Meta emphasizing this as an entertainment device first, with its productivity potential presented as secondary uses. Users gain the ability to stream 3D films via Disney+ for the first time outside Apple’s ecosystem. In addition, Meta said that it will work to bring 3D experiences curated especially for the headset. These feature Open Season, a 180-degree immersive video project following NBA star Draymond Green; Stuntnuts, a 3D action production by filmmaker Matthew Vaughn (Kingsmen, Argylle); and National Geographic: Beyond, a 180-degree 3D series developed alongside ILM National Geographic.
Beyond that, Meta also said it was going to offer VR Enhanced Cinema
, describing this as a film playing in 3D with spatial audio while the room around you responds to it, with immersive environments and dynamic effects tied to what is on screen
.

Gaming, HoloComms, and Market Positioning
While entertainment drives the hardware pitch, gaming and communication tools fill out the interface capabilities. Gesture-based controls will support 75 titles right out of the box, and incorporating Touch Plus controllers unlocks compatibility with the entire Meta Quest software library. For communication purposes, holographic technology will generate a lifelike digital persona that mirrors real-time expressions and reactions for hands-free video calls. Interacting with someone who also owns Meta VR Glasses places their projection directly before you, whereas users on standard devices simply view your avatar on their display. Meta also said that you can connect a Mac or PC to create a virtual office.

Priced at $1,299.99 US dollars, the device sits below competitors like Apple’s Vision Pro, which remains the pinnacle of personal home cinema that I’ve experienced so far, while entering a growing field of lightweight viewing options. Alternative hardware includes the RayNeo GT Max glasses, released in August 2026 for an accessible £399/$429, which are also aimed at movie watching, but without the mixed reality immersion capabilities of the Meta glasses.
Spring 2027 Commercial Launch Schedule
Consumers interested in purchasing the hardware must wait past the initial announcement window. Hitting shelves at one-third the cost and up to one-sixth of the facial weight, the spring 2027 launch of the Meta VR glasses will reveal how well they perform in the market.
