Konami Remains Undecided on Future Metal Gear Solid Remakes After ‘Delta: Snake Eater’ Success

Konami is weighing its options for the future of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, with the possibility of further remakes remaining uncertain despite the critical and commercial success of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. A producer for the iconic series revealed the challenges of revisiting older titles, suggesting that new entries may be prioritized.

Following the release of Delta: Snake Eater, fans have eagerly anticipated what Konami has planned next for the beloved stealth-action series. Speaking with Japanese media outlet Real Sound, a key producer acknowledged the company’s desire to continue expanding access to the franchise. “Right now, I’m thinking about what to do next,” the producer explained. “With Metal Gear Solid, I’ve created opportunities for new players to experience my work, so I want to continue doing that.”

However, a definitive roadmap for future projects has yet to be established. While remakes haven’t been ruled out, Konami is also considering entirely new installments. The producer emphasized the unique challenges inherent in adapting each game in the series, noting that Metal Gear Solid’s history spans decades of evolving technology. “The Metal Gear Solid series is like the history of video games, covering everything from pixel art to cinematic expressions, so the remake methods and expressions will be different for each work,” they stated. “We do not intend to apply the methodology created for ‘MGS Delta’ to all works, but will consider the best method for each work.”

The development team expressed confidence in the quality of Snake Eater‘s remake, stating it “has achieved quality that modern players can enjoy without compromising the appeal of the previous game.” Despite this success, a remake of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots presents significant hurdles.

The producer indicated that the technical complexities of Metal Gear Solid 4 could prove insurmountable. “The hardware at that time required a very special structure to achieve 3D performance with the technology at the time, and MGS4 also had very special code… It would be difficult to talk about it now (laughs).” This suggests that recreating the game’s intricate systems on modern platforms would be a substantial undertaking.

For now, fans seeking to experience the full scope of the Metal Gear Solid saga may need to rely on the original releases. The future of the franchise remains open-ended, but Konami’s commitment to expanding its reach is clear. Whether that takes the form of further remakes or bold new adventures remains to be seen.
