Metallica performed the cover as part of the Gershwin Prize presentation to Elton John. Take a look here.

Elton John and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin were honored at this year’s Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, held on Wednesday, March 20. The prize is an award given to outstanding composers and performers for their lifelong contributions to popular music. During the ceremony, several musicians performed songs by the British singer – including Metallica.

Metallica opened the ceremony

Ahead of the event, Metallica said in a press statement that they were “overjoyed and proud to have been invited to perform at this very special event.” They also described John and Taupin as a “legendary songwriting team.” The group opened the show with a cover of the song “Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding.”

When they announced their participation, Metallica stated, “Elton and Bernie have worked together for over 56 years and together have composed some of the most memorable and influential songs of our lives.”

More cover songs and Elton John himself followed

In addition to the metal band, Annie Lennox also appeared and performed “Border Song”. She also joined Joni Mitchell and Brandi Carlile for a collaborative cover of “I’m Still Standing.” The Gabriels’ Jacob Lusk sang “Bennie And The Jets” while Charlie Puth covered “Something About The Way You Look Tonight.” Elton John himself ended the evening with a live rendition of his 1970 classic “Your Song.”
