Meteor Explodes Over Ohio & Pennsylvania: Residents Report Loud Boom, Fireball

A loud boom rattled homes and sparked widespread curiosity across the northeastern United States on Tuesday morning, March 17, 2026. Residents from at least ten states – Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia – plus Washington D.C. And Ontario, Canada, reported hearing the sound and witnessing a bright fireball streaking across the sky. NASA has since confirmed the event was caused by a meteor entering the Earth’s atmosphere at approximately 72,000 kilometers per hour.

The celestial event, estimated to be roughly two meters in size and weighing around seven tons before fragmentation, unleashed an energy equivalent to 250 tons of TNT upon breaking apart, according to NASA. This fragmentation created a pressure wave that propagated to the ground, resulting in the booms heard across a wide geographic area. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland initially responded to reports, noting imagery from the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) suggested a meteorological event, ultimately confirming the meteor’s role in the sonic disturbance.

Meteor Fragments Reported Near Medina, Ohio

Eyewitness accounts and initial reports indicate the meteor was first observed near Cleveland, Ohio. As the object disintegrated, debris is believed to have fallen over the residential area of Medina, Ohio. While the potential for damage from falling fragments exists, NASA experts have indicated that the likelihood of direct impact to people or property is extremely low. Meteorites are typically cold to the touch upon impact, dispelling any expectation of smoldering craters.

Sonic Boom Reached Pennsylvania and Beyond

The sonic boom generated by the meteor’s passage wasn’t limited to Ohio. Reports flooded in from Pennsylvania, with residents initially speculating about earthquakes or local explosions. The breadth of the reports underscores the significant energy released during the atmospheric entry. The NWS noted that the GLM detected light from the meteor, a phenomenon explained by the fact that meteors resemble lightning strikes in the atmosphere, producing long, bright flares of light.

A Common, Though Rarely Observed, Occurrence

While dramatic, such events are not uncommon. According to NASA, approximately 44,000 kilograms of meteoric material enter the Earth’s atmosphere daily. The vast majority of this material burns up before reaching the surface. However, the size and trajectory of this particular meteor, combined with its passage over densely populated areas, made it a particularly noticeable event. A planetologist speaking with News 5 Cleveland described the meteor as being somewhere in size “between a motor and a car.”

Meteoritenjäger, or meteorite hunters, are now expected to start searching the area around Medina, Ohio, for unusual stones – potential remnants of the celestial visitor. The search will focus on identifying and collecting any fragments that survived the fiery descent through the atmosphere.

Daily Cosmic Dust and Spectacular Sky Shows

The event serves as a reminder of the constant influx of material from space. While larger meteors like the one seen over Ohio are rare, the Earth is continuously bombarded with cosmic dust. More spectacular displays, such as the annual Perseid meteor shower, occur when the Earth passes through debris trails left by comets. The Perseids, visible each August, originate from the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the sun approximately every 135 years. However, even during these showers, only a small fraction of the debris reaches the ground as meteorites.
