In a surprising combination of classic rock and celestial science, a driver in Texas witnessed a fireball in the night sky while listening to the Beatles’ psychedelic anthem “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” And yes, he captured it all in a viral video. The peculiar sequence was recorded just before 8 pm on Tuesday, February 13 on State Highway 154 near Quitman, about 80 kilometers east of Dallas.
The driver, calling himself Savage Mister, witnessed the fireball just as the 1967 track “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” reached the line: “Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile…”
In the viral video, he exclaims, “Whoa, that looked like fireworks, man!” He describes the phenomenon as something green in color, although he admits that the camera fails to accurately capture the colors. “Whoa, man, that was cool,” he adds.
Unfortunately, he lost sight of the fireball as he hid behind the tree line. In his YouTube comments, he speculates: “It probably disintegrated before hitting land. “I didn’t hear any sound, but then the Beatles were playing.”
Massive record of sightings
The video was uploaded and shared with the American Meteor Society, which has received nearly 30 reports from people who saw the fireball. Reports also came from Louisiana and Oklahoma, authorities said.
Some were looking for help identifying what they saw, while others simply wanted to know they weren’t alone. One woman shared: “I stopped on the road and this appeared right above me… I was shocked at how low it was in the sky and how quickly it faded away.”
Another testimonial described the sighting as “one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.” Experts point out that fireballs and boloids are meteors that burn bright enough to be seen over a wide area. According to NASA, these objects can exceed one meter in size, and the fireballs that explode in the atmosphere are technically called boloids.
