Meteorological Department Warns of Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain

Pathio district recorded 58.7 millimeters of rain as a low-pressure system moved into the Andaman Sea, driving storms, flash floods and high coastal waves across parts of Thailand.

The Meteorological Department reports that while rainfall in southern provinces has begun to taper off, precipitation remains heavy in localized areas. At the same time, upper Thailand, including Bangkok and its surrounding metropolitan region, continues to experience thunderstorms accompanied by sudden wind gusts according to agency forecasts.

Chumphon Records 58.7 Millimeters of Rain as Gulf Waves Surge Ashore

In Chumphon province, the local meteorological station warned residents to brace for rough weather as heavy storms moved inland from the Gulf of Thailand, leaving the sky dark since morning. Twenty-four-hour precipitation totals ending early October 30 showed Pathio district recording the highest accumulation in the province at 58.7 millimeters, creating hazardous travel conditions and local flooding.

  • Pathio: 58.7 millimeters
  • Tha Sae: 26.2 millimeters

  • Mueang Chumphon: 18.4 millimeters
  • La-mae: 18.0 millimeters
  • Lang Suan: 13.4 millimeters
  • Phato: 9.2 millimeters

The severe weather forced administrative action in Tha Sae district, where the Hong Charoen Subdistrict Administrative Organization announced a temporary road closure along the Ang Thong-Ran Tat Phum route near Ban Klang School due to deep standing water as reported by regional authorities. Officials advised motorists to seek alternative routes until floodwaters recede.

Air Masses Clash Over Upper Thailand and the Andaman Sea

Weather authorities attribute the unstable atmospheric conditions to a combination of seasonal pressure systems. A low-pressure cell that covered the central south has moved into the Andaman Sea, while easterly and southeasterly winds sweep moisture across the country and the Gulf of Thailand. Concurrently, a high-pressure system or cold air mass originating from China continues to press down over upper Thailand and the South China Sea.

Cold Front Brings Weather Changes After November 6

Somkuan Tonchan, director of the Aviation Meteorology Division and weather expert at the Meteorological Department, outlined medium-range forecasts derived from ECMWF computer models covering October 30 through November 13.

The analysis indicates that while southern heavy rain is diminishing, residual water remains in various river basins. Cool-season winds have not yet established a steady direction because cold air masses spreading into the South China Sea continue to drive humid easterly and southeasterly airflow.

The first week of November will see winds become more consistent. Signs of cooler weather arrive after November 6, though the opening days may bring rain first due to high regional humidity and intermittent showers.

Northern regions and upper northeastern provinces are already seeing reduced rainfall and declining temperatures. However, lower northeastern areas, the central plains, Bangkok and its vicinity, and the upper south will continue to experience afternoon and evening thundershowers, with southern sections along the Gulf expected to see renewed rainfall increases after November 5.
