The Mets are in hot pursuit of White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. Talks between New York and Chicago are active, with the Mets identified as one of the most determined teams in acquiring the star outfielder.

Acuña Mentioned in Negotiations

According to reports, Mets infielder Luisangel Acuña is among the players being discussed. Previously, the White Sox were said to want Mark Vientos included in a potential deal for Robert Jr. While Vientos has had a down year, this was seen as a significant demand given Robert Jr.’s inconsistent offensive performance. Acuña, 23, has not yet shown the same potential as Vientos did last season, when he hit .266/.322/.516 with 27 home runs.

Player Profiles and Potential Fit

Acuña is considered a superior defender to Vientos but possesses a more limited offensive game. Acuña, a right-handed hitter, has a career slash line of .253/.300/.354 with three home runs in 91 games. In 640 Triple-A plate appearances, he has posted similar numbers: .260/.303/.356. He is a capable contact hitter but lacks significant power.

With Francisco Lindor entrenched at shortstop, Acuña has primarily played second base for the Mets. Scouts credit him with the athleticism and arm strength needed for shortstop, which could increase his value to another club. The White Sox are using Colson Montgomery more at third base, and Chase Meidroth is seeing more time at shortstop. Meidroth, a rookie, has a good approach but only three home runs in his first 82 MLB games. Most scouting reports projected him as a long-term second baseman.

Trade Outlook and Robert Jr.’s Future

It remains uncertain whether the Mets will successfully acquire Robert Jr. or if Acuña will be part of any package. He is likely one of many prospects being considered as both teams explore trade frameworks. The White Sox have indicated they might hold onto their center fielder beyond the deadline if they don’t receive a strong prospect package. Robert Jr. is under contract for two more seasons through consecutive $20 million club options.

It seems more probable that he will receive a $2 million buyout next offseason. However, the White Sox have suggested they could pick up the first option rather than accept a less-than-ideal trade return. Their actions in the coming days will clarify whether this is a serious consideration or a negotiating tactic. Beyond New York, the Padres and Phillies have also recently expressed interest in Robert Jr.
