Within the activities of the First National Public Health Day 2023: “Healthy community, strong community” there was a historic event. A total of two thousand 857 girls and boys from Mexico City received the certification that accredits them as health promotersIn addition, 32 schools were declared as Healthy Spaces.
The award ceremony was held at the “Meeting with girls and boys who promote health and recognition of schools that promote health.” The event was organized by the General Directorate of Health Promotion (DGPS) of the federal government and the Public Health Services of Mexico City, in the “Octavio Paz” Room of the Mexico Library.
What did they do to receive this distinction?
The infants certified as promoters received training in proper nutrition, adequate hydration, benefits of physical activity, interculturality, children’s human rights, care for the environment, personal hygiene, accident prevention and driver education, as well as the importance of the National Health Card.
schools accredited as Healthy Spaces verified compliance with a series of actions grouped into four axes in the National School Health Strategy: participation in community action, development and competencies in health, personal risk management and work with other sectors.
The Undersecretary of Basic Education of the SEP, Martha Velda Hernandez Moreno, pointed out that today’s celebration becomes important because “we have an exceptional treasure, which is the work of almost three thousand girls and boys and 180 schools that today know a lot about health and above all about health care. In addition, it is not only knowing about health, but promoting it and the best thing about this is the way in which they are doing it”.
The head of the DGPS of the Ministry of Health, Ricardo Cortes Alcalasaid that this is a public health party, which is not simply having medicines, vaccines, hospitals and care centers.
“Public health is having culture, education, health, girls and boys, their mothers and fathers and the authorities, come together to celebrate the work of the entire school year to convert almost three thousand girls and boys into promoters and health promoters and a very significant number of schools certified in terms of health promotion as healthy environments, as healthy schools”.
The public servant pondered the importance of prevention and of having health promoters throughout the national territory, homes and schools, to avoid or reduce the risk of people getting sick.
New National Health Card
He also stressed the need for the National Health Cardwhich includes helpful information for the family, ranging from the harms of spending too much time in front of an electronic device, to oral care topics.
The Secretary of Health of the government of Mexico City, Olive Lopez Arellanohighlighted that the recognition of schools accredited as Healthy Spaces opens the possibility of transforming a place where people stay for a long time, in an environment that provides health and prevents disease.
The general director of Public Health Services of Mexico City, Jorge Alfredo Ochoa Moreno, announced that during the First National Day of Public Health they will bring the services closer to people of all ages, among whom they will carry out intensive actions to promote the health and disease prevention.
