Mexico City, winner of the Lee Kuan Yew 2024 award

For its actions in terms of innovation, Mexico City was recognized with the Lee Kuan Yew 2024 award, awarded by the Singapore Urban Development Authority.

“It is a prestigious international award that recognizes and honors cities and governments that have demonstrated leadership in creating sustainable urban communities. It is named in honor of Lee Kuan Yew, the first Prime Minister,” the head of GovernmentMartí Batres.

Award-winning cities are selected by a distinguished international committee; Evaluation criteria include the city’s ability to address urban challenges, transportation management, environmental sustainability, residents’ quality of life, and innovation in urban management.

Since 2010, only six Cities had been recognized with this award: Bilbao (Spain), New York (United States), Suzhou (China), Medellín (Colombia), Seoul (South Korea), Vienna (Austria) and now the City from Mexico.

For 2024, Mexico City was selected among four finalist cities: Wellington New Zealand; Melbourne, Australia; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Cape Town, South Africa.

In the award announcement, the capital’s president highlighted the capital as the City with the largest free WiFi network in the world and a pioneer in the implementation of social, mobility and sustainability policies.

“This award recognizes the efforts of leaders and organizations to overcome the challenges they face… Mexico City is the seventh to be recognized with this award,” added the non-resident ambassador of the Republic of Singapore to Mexico, Gerald Balendran Singham.
