Mexico hopes to rejoin G77+China debates

The Government of Mexico announced this Friday its interest in rejoining “the debates and efforts” of the Group of 77 and China, the largest group of developing countries within the framework of the UN.

The Mexican Foreign Minister, Alicia Barcena, He made these statements when speaking on the first day of the G77+China Summit in Havanaan event focused on this occasion on cooperation in science, technology and innovation.

The objective with this movement, added the chancellor, is to contribute to “shaping a new world”, promote south-south cooperation to face challenges such as the climate crisis and combat the current economic and social asymmetries in the world.

The Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the North American country assured that mechanisms such as the G77+China have a fundamental role to “find sources of development and not war.”

Likewise, Bárcena asked to expand international collaboration in scientific exchange and between universities.

The Mexican Foreign Minister also reiterated that her country condemns “the economic, commercial (and) financial blockade (embargo)” of the United States against Cuba, which she considered “totally unjustified and contrary to international law.”

He also criticized the island’s inclusion on the US State Department’s list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

“Mexico firmly maintains that there should be no unilateral sanctions of any kind,” he said.

The G77+China summit in Havana brought together presidents such as Brazilian Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Colombian Gustavo Petro and Venezuelan Nicolás Maduro, as well as the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres.

The G77+China is the largest dialogue and consultation group within the United Nations. It currently has 134 members, mainly from Latin AmericaAfrica, the Middle East and Asia.

Mexico, the founding state of this forum, withdrew in 1994, after acceding to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Currently it was the only country in Latin America that was not present in the G77+China.
