mexico City, Mexico – At least 13 people died adn nearly 100 where injured when a train derailed in southern Mexico on sunday, halting rail traffic between the Pacific and gulf coasts.
Interoceanic train Derailment Leaves Dozens Injured
The Interoceanic Train, connecting the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz, went off the rails near the town of Nizanda as it navigated a curve. The accident raises questions about the safety and rapid development of Mexico’s ambitious new rail infrastructure projects.
“The Mexican Navy has informed me that, tragically, 13 people died in the Interoceanic Train accident,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum posted on X, adding that 98 people were injured.
Sheinbaum stated she directed the secretary of the navy and the undersecretary of human rights of the Ministry of the Interior to travel to the site and provide assistance to the families affected by the tragedy.
Oaxaca state Gov. Salomon Jara announced on X Sunday that multiple government agencies had reached the accident location to aid the injured.
A total of 241 passengers and nine crew members were aboard the train when the derailment occurred.
A Key Component of Mexico’s Infrastructure Push
The Interoceanic Train was inaugurated in 2023 by then President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. The rail service is a central part of a larger initiative to bolster train travel in southern Mexico and develop infrastructure along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec-a strategically important, narrow land bridge connecting the Pacific and gulf of Mexico.
