Mia Pohankova Upsets Naomi Osaka at Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo

Former world number one Naomi Osaka concluded her tennis season with a second-round exit at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Thursday, October 29, 2026, falling in straight sets to 18-year-old Slovak Mia Pohankova.

The four-time Grand Slam champion lost 6-3, 7-5 to Pohankova, who is ranked 144th in the world. Competing at the Tokyo tournament for the first time in four years, the 29-year-old Japanese star entered the court wearing a striking red kimono-style gown featuring a long frilly train. She explained that the choice offered a visual contrast to the blue crane-pattern outfit she debuted during her opening match earlier in the week.

Osaka started the match strong by landing an opening ace, but Pohankova quickly seized control. The teenager, a former junior Wimbledon champion, mentioned she grew up watching her opponent on television. She broke Osaka three times in the opening set and maintained her momentum throughout the contest. Pohankova served seven aces over the course of the match.

Reflecting on the challenge of facing a relatively unknown competitor, Osaka noted the difficulty of preparing for someone whose game she had not previously encountered.

It is a little difficult, but I also remember when I was in her position and I was playing players that I watched on TV. I guess age catches up to you eventually.

Fashion Serves as a Creative Outlet on Court

There are so many things that go on in my mind, and it was just a creative outlet. All the other sports are allowed to do that, and tennis is more subdued and restrained.

Tennis Player Aims for Another Grand Slam Final

Osaka currently holds the number 18 ranking globally. Her 2026 season concludes without a title. She has not appeared in a Grand Slam final since returning to tennis following a 15-month maternity break after the birth of her daughter Shai in 2023.

Obviously when I play a Slam, it’s in my mind to challenge for it. Unfortunately I haven’t been in that position yet, and I’m going to keep attempting it. But if you’re asking me how I think my tennis is, I think it’s pretty good.

She believes that her current level of play will eventually lead her back to the championship rounds of the major tournaments she continues to target.
