South Miami Band Director Wins Coveted Grammy Music Educator Award

South Florida’s public school system and one of its dedicated educators received national recognition on Sunday, February 1, 2026, as Jennifer Jimenez, band director at South Miami Senior High School, was awarded the prestigious Music Educator Award at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

Miami-Dade Public Schools expressed immense pride in Jimenez’s achievement, stating, “Her dedication to her students and her program reflects the excellence we value.” The award, presented live on CBS, celebrates teachers who demonstrate a lasting commitment to music education and its vital role in schools nationwide.

A 19-Year Legacy of Musical Excellence

For 19 years, Jimenez has been the driving force behind the music program at South Miami Senior High. The Recording Academy highlighted her as “a standard-bearer for excellence, community building, and music education advocacy.” Her guiding philosophy – that “band is the family that you choose” – has fostered a supportive and inspiring environment for students and families alike.

Jimenez emerged victorious from a highly competitive field, selected from a pool of 10 finalists and 15 semifinalists. Her journey to this honor reflects a lifelong dedication to music and education. Originally from Nebraska, she honed her skills at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, where she was later inducted into the Band Hall of Fame. She furthered her expertise by earning a master’s degree in music education from Florida International University’s Wertheim School of Music.

National Stage and Community Impact

Under Jimenez’s leadership, the South Miami Senior High band has achieved remarkable success, performing at iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall and even gracing the stage at two Super Bowls. However, her influence extends far beyond performance accolades.

The Recording Academy noted her commitment to nurturing the next generation of music educators, serving as a clinical supervising teacher and actively contributing to professional development through district and state presentations. She is also an active adjudicator and holds leadership positions within the Florida Bandmaster’s Association and as a charter and state board member for Women Band Director International’s Florida chapter.

A Family Affair and Future Investment

Jimenez resides in South Florida with her husband, Desi, and their children, Noah and Eden, along with their beloved puppy, Obi-Wan.

In addition to the honor, Jimenez will receive a $10,000 award and a matching grant for South Miami Senior High’s music program, ensuring continued opportunities for students to thrive in the arts. This investment will undoubtedly amplify the positive impact Jimenez has already made on countless young musicians.
