An almost improvised performance at the Palau de la Música Catalana now more than two decades ago, a solid musical couple was born who lives at the crossroads that unites jazz and flamenco and who has given birth to three albums: Spain, Spain Again and Spain Forever.

Tomatito and Michel Camilo or Michel Camilo and Tomatito, as they announced they already have a fourth joint work in dancethey returned to the Porta Ferrada festival on Wednesday, this time at the Teatre Narcís Masferrer, to raise, with complicity and mastery, more than ninety minutes of music built on the repertoire together that they have been building in these almost thirty years as partners.

In Sant Feliu de Guíxols, in front of around 400 dedicated spectators, tangos played Pitchlike the Libertango from the beginning; the mystery of the Brazilian Egberto Gismonti or melancholy Spanish love song of Charlie Haden.

With the dialogue of the guitar and the piano, they also added to the evening al Morricone of Paradise cinema; a Chick Corea with a tribute to his father, Armando’s Rhumbaand to Tomatito’s son with the buleria that he dedicated to him, To my boy Jose.

That’s what it’s all about more than a quarter of a century and between José and his five sisters they have given him seventeen grandchildren – the last one, this same week – and a great-granddaughter. “The music is fine, but it’s the clean ones that keep me going,” joked José Fernández Torres, Tomatito, who exchanged understanding glances with his partner throughout the recital.

In the end there was the magisterial Spain by Chick Corea, where it all began, and a taste of the latest Andalusian and Dominican craze, a version of Aranjuez’s concert.

Joaquín Rodrigo premiered it in 1940 curiously on the same stage that united the careers of the two musiciansthe Palau, but hopefully the coincidence will not be the excuse to close the circle, but one more step to continue making our way (and Spains) together.
