Michigan Wolverines Fire Football Coach Sherrone Moore Amidst Conduct Investigation

Michigan’s football program faces another significant disruption as head coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated for cause, following an investigation into an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member. The university announced the decision on Wednesday, marking a swift and decisive response to the findings.

The move comes at a turbulent time for the Wolverines, still reeling from a recent sign-stealing scandal and the departure of former head coach Jim Harbaugh to the National Football League.

University Cites Policy Violation

According to a statement released by Wolverines athletic director Warde Manuel, the termination is effective immediately. “Following a university investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” Manuel stated. “This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”

The university did not release further details regarding the nature of the relationship or the specifics of the investigation.

Moore’s Brief Tenure as Head Coach

Moore, 39, assumed the head coaching role in 2024 after Harbaugh’s departure. During his two seasons leading the team, Michigan achieved a 17-8 record. However, his time was also marked by controversy. He was suspended for two games in 2025 as part of the fallout from the sign-stealing scandal that plagued the program.

Prior to becoming head coach, Moore had been a key member of the Wolverines’ coaching staff since 2018, initially serving as the tight ends coach. He was later promoted to co-offensive coordinator in 2021, and then took on the full offensive coordinator role at the start of the 2023 season.

Recent Performance and Upcoming Bowl Game

The Wolverines concluded the 2023 season with a 9-3 record, finishing 18th in the final College Football Playoff rankings. Their season ended with a loss to rival Ohio State in late November, snapping a four-year winning streak against the Buckeyes. It was Michigan’s first defeat to Ohio State since 2019.

Michigan is still scheduled to compete in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31 against the No. 13 Texas Longhorns. Associate head coach Biff Poggi will serve as the interim head coach for the bowl game.

The program now faces the challenge of navigating another coaching transition amidst ongoing scrutiny, raising questions about the future stability of the Wolverines’ football program.
