A family of dedicated sign language interpreters – a couple and their teenage daughter – were discovered murdered in Michoacán, Mexico, after being missing for several days. The bodies were found charred on the Mexico-Morelia-Guadalajara highway, raising serious concerns about the safety of public servants and advocates in the region.
The victims were identified as Víctor Manuel MV, Anayeli HL, and their daughter, MEMH, according to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE). The tragic discovery comes after the family disappeared on January 14 from the Former Hacienda La Huerta neighborhood south of Morelia, prompting a search initiated by concerned relatives.
Family Dedicated to Accessibility
Víctor Manuel MV and Anayeli HL were well-known for their work providing sign language interpretation services to both the Michoacán Congress and the state government, as well as at various public events. Their commitment to accessibility extended to political spheres, as they also served on the team of Víctor Zurita, the first deaf legislator in Michoacán, a former local deputy of the Morena party.
Investigation Underway
The bodies were initially found last Saturday, January 17, in the town of Ucareo, within the municipality of Zinapécuaro, approximately 60 kilometers from Morelia. However, positive identification was delayed until this Thursday, necessitating their transfer to the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO).
“Operational and scientific investigations confirmed that the three bodies found on the western highway correspond to that of the victims,” a senior official stated. The FGE is currently focused on building a comprehensive case file and conducting all necessary investigative procedures.
Rising Concerns Over Violence in Michoacán
The circumstances surrounding the murders remain unclear, but the case highlights the escalating violence impacting Michoacán. The State Attorney General’s Office has pledged to clarify the facts, determine the events leading to the tragedy, and hold those responsible accountable, in accordance with the law.
The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
