Additional articles on the subject: Announces today (Thursday) that it will reduce the workforce in its gaming division by 1,900 employees, approximately 9% of the total employees in the sector, including employees of the recently acquired Activision Blizzard.

“As we move into 2024, the leadership of Microsoft’s gaming division and Activision Blizzard are committed to aligning strategy and execution with a sustainable cost structure that will support all of our growing businesses,” wrote Microsoft’s head of gaming, Phil Spencer. “Looking ahead, we will continue to invest in areas that will grow the business and support our strategy to bring more games to more players around the world.”

The round of layoffs comes just three months after Microsoft completed its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. In recent weeks, a number of gaming companies have announced that they will also cut staff in response to a more challenging time in the industry, including Unity, Riot and Twitch.

The cuts are not only in the field of gaming. Large companies such as Alphabet, Amazon and eBay have also laid off thousands of workers recently in order to save costs and increase profitability. In total, more than 21,000 workers were laid off from 76 technology companies. The entire technology sector laid off 168,032 workers in 2023, the highest number of all industries. This includes laying off more than 10,000 employees at Microsoft.
