Worldwide, more than one in two people will suffer from at least one headache during this year. There are more than 200 causes of headaches, and some headaches may just be a symptom of an underlying cause. But the vast majority are so-called primary headaches, unrelated to another pathology or identifiable trauma. This term includes several diseases. How to recognize them?

• Migraine, a disease of young women

With 15% of the population affected, migraine is one of the most common headaches. “Among children, there are as many boys as girls with migraines, but after puberty, there are three women for every man. Then, over the age of 60, only 2% to 3% of people keep an active migraine”, explains Professor Anne Ducros, neurologist at Montpellier University Hospital. Migraine can start at any age, but usually appears around puberty or early adulthood.
