Amidst growing national concern over the management of stray dogs in India, singer and actor Mika Singh has publicly offered 10 acres of land to support the care and welfare of these animals. Singh’s pledge comes as the Supreme Court of India deliberates on the issue, clarifying its position against calls for the removal of street dogs and emphasizing a humane approach to population control.
The artist took to X (formerly Twitter) to urge the court to prioritize the well-being of stray canines, echoing anxieties among animal lovers regarding potential adverse actions. “Mika Singh humbly appeals to the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India to kindly consider refraining from any actions that may adversely affect the welfare of dogs,” he wrote.
A Commitment to Animal Welfare
Reaffirming his long-held support for animal rights, Singh stated he is “fully prepared to donate 10 acres exclusively for the care, shelter, and welfare of dogs.” He envisions the land being utilized for constructing shelters and providing necessary facilities to ensure the animals’ safety, health, and well-being. However, Singh also underscored that land alone is insufficient, stressing the critical need for adequate manpower and infrastructure for effective care.
“My only request is support in terms of proper manpower and caretakers who can responsibly look after these animals,” Singh concluded. “I am willing to provide the land for the construction of shelters and for all initiatives aimed at ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of dogs.”
Supreme Court Clarifies Position on Stray Dog Management
Singh’s appeal coincides with heightened public attention surrounding the Supreme Court’s discussions on stray dog management. During a recent hearing, the court moved to dispel fears of a widespread removal of street dogs, clarifying that no such order had been issued.
A three-judge special bench – comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and N V Anjaria – reassured the public that the court’s primary focus remains on enforcing the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023. These rules advocate for a scientific, humane, and sustainable approach to managing stray dog populations.
Sterilization and Vaccination as Key Solutions
Acknowledging the increasing incidence of dog-bite incidents and the resulting public concern, the bench emphasized that a systematic approach to sterilization and vaccination, followed by the return of dogs to their territories, is the most effective solution. This method, the court noted, strikes a balance between ensuring human safety and upholding animal welfare.
The judges also pointed out deficiencies in the current legal framework, observing that local authorities have largely failed to effectively implement the ABC Rules. This lack of coordinated strategy, they stated, hinders progress toward a sustainable solution.
