New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel makes his first career regular-season appearance at Soldier Field on Thursday night, facing the Chicago Bears in a prime-time matchup that arrives after nearly three decades in the NFL as a player and coach.
Mike Vrabel Reaches Soldier Field After 27 Seasons
Mike Vrabel is in his 27th season connected to the NFL as a player or coach. Yet, Thursday night marks his first career regular-season game at Soldier Field, according to NBC Sports. Larry Mayer of the Bears team website reported the milestone statistic.
Vrabel’s long professional journey spans playing stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1997 to 2000, the New England Patriots from 2001 to 2008, and the Kansas City Chiefs from 2009 to 2010. He later worked as an assistant for the Houston Texans between 2014 and 2017 before serving as head coach for the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023 and taking over as the Patriots’ head coach in 2025.
Because Vrabel spent nearly his entire career in the AFC, his opportunities to face the Bears on the road were exceptionally rare. The only previous away game Vrabel played against Chicago occurred in 2002 as a member of the Patriots. That contest took place in Champaign, Illinois, while Soldier Field underwent renovations, resulting in a 33-30 New England victory. Ben Volin of the Boston Globe noted that Vrabel’s Titans also played preseason games at Soldier Field in 2019 and 2023, but Thursday marks his first regular-season appearance at the historic Chicago venue.
Defensive Struggles and Missed Tackles Lead to a Patriots Loss
The milestone night did not yield a victory for the visiting Patriots, who fell 30-24 to the Chicago Bears in the Thursday Night Football matchup. New England battled offensive line injuries, but head coach Mike Vrabel pointed directly to fundamental execution as the primary culprit for his team’s defensive failures.

That assessment was highlighted from Vrabel’s postgame press conference with Mark Daniels of MassLive.com. New England struggled heavily against big plays during the road game. In the first half alone, Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III hauled in four catches for 130 yards and a touchdown. The scoring play came on a third-and-17 situation with less than 20 seconds remaining in the second quarter, when Caleb Williams connected with Burden for a 24-yard touchdown.

Colston Loveland and Rome Odunze also inflicted damage with sizable gains for Chicago. New England committed 10 penalties and missed key tackles throughout the contest, gifting momentum to the Bears at critical moments. The defensive lapses contrasted sharply with the disciplined football that allowed the Patriots to post a perfect 8-0 road record and reach the Super Bowl last season.
New England Struggles with Offensive Mistakes and Injuries
The loss also exposed offensive missed opportunities for New England. Quarterback Drake Maye threw an interception in the end zone instead of finding an open Efton Chism III, targeting tight end Eli Raridon on the play instead. Meanwhile, the Patriots played without their leading receiver, Romeo Doubs, who was sidelined with a shoulder injury. Wide receiver A.J. Brown played for the first time since Week 1, catching three passes for 27 yards on a team-high 10 targets while acknowledging that drops plagued his performance.

On the other side of the ball, Dennis Allen’s Chicago defense continued a notable turnaround from the previous season. Entering the matchup, the Bears ranked among the top seven in points and yards allowed, maintaining strong statistical standing despite allowing 6.0 yards per play. Chicago played without DL Montez Sweat, who served the second of a two-game suspension, though nickelback Kyler Gordon provided a spark in his season debut by recording three sacks on 16 snaps.
Unresolved Questions and Upcoming Travel for New England
The defeat leaves New England with pressing concerns as the team heads home to prepare for a Week 8 road game against the winless Miami Dolphins.
