The Rise of a Champion
The 400 meters is widely considered one of athletics’ most demanding disciplines. Unlike the explosive sprints of the 100 and 200 meters, or the pacing required for longer distances like the 800 meters, the 400 demands a unique blend of speed, power, and endurance. Runners must navigate a delicate balance, maintaining near-maximum effort throughout the entire lap.This makes 400-meter runners a rare breed, celebrated for their exceptional athleticism.
Born in Kaluga,Linge took up athletics relatively late,at the age of 14,having previously focused on football. His natural talent was quickly recognized by a coach at the Kaluga Sports School “Youth,” and he rapidly progressed, moving to Moscow at 18 to join GCOLIFK and the USSR junior athletics team.
While he initially struggled to break into the national ranks, finishing 10th in the 1979 USSR Championship, Linge experienced a breakthrough in 1980, the Olympic year. He not only won the national championship but also set a new national record, solidifying his place on the Soviet team for the Moscow Games. Initially, coaches were hesitant to feature him in individual events, limiting his participation to the relay team.
The 1980 Moscow Olympics proved to be a defining moment. The 22-year-old Linge secured the gold medal, instantly transforming him into a national icon. He was awarded the title of Merited Master of Sports, the Order of Honor, and a coveted black “Volga” automobile – a symbol of status and success in the Soviet Union. He married his childhood sweetheart, and the couple was promised an apartment in Moscow, though this promise would ultimately remain unfulfilled. The 4,000 ruble bonus for his Olympic victory provided immediate financial relief.
A Descent into Darkness
Linge’s athletic career was cut short by injury shortly after the Games, preventing him from returning to his previous form. The promised apartment never materialized, and the modest salaries offered by his Moscow team,
Arrest, Imprisonment, and a Failed Comeback
Linge’s criminal enterprise flourished, allowing him to enjoy a lavish lifestyle filled with expensive restaurants, scarce goods, and generous gifts. He rationalized his actions, telling himself he was merely exploiting other fraudsters. He believed his European appearance would shield him from suspicion, assuming law enforcement would struggle to identify him.
Though, his confidence proved misplaced. One of his victims, a Vietnamese merchant he had defrauded, recognized him on the street and reported him to the police. Linge was arrested and cooperated with the examination.
Surprisingly, Linge did not embrace a life of crime while incarcerated. Instead, he learned several construction trades and, upon his release, formed a successful construction crew. He invested his earnings in a new business venture in the early 1990s, only to be defrauded by former partners – individuals with a history of deception, mirroring his earlier victims. this left him deeply in debt and insolvent.
A Mysterious End
In Febuary,an old friend discovered Linge lying on the staircase of his apartment building with a fatal head injury.An ambulance was called, but doctors were unable to save him. Police launched an investigation, interviewing acquaintances and neighbors, but the crime remains unsolved to this day.
