In commemoration of the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Italy, the ‘DBEW EXHIBITION 2024’ exhibition planned by the Oriental Culture & Design Center (OCDC) of Kookmin University (President Seungryeol Jeong) ended successfully.

This exhibition ‘DBEW EXHIBITION 2024’, co-hosted by Kookmin University’s Institute for Oriental Culture and Design (OCDC), LINC3.0 Project Group, and ADI Design Museum, is based on cooperation between the Italian Embassy and Cultural Center in Korea, the Korean Embassy and Cultural Center in Italy, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. It was sponsored by Hanjin Co., Ltd., Korean Air Co., Ltd., and Fursys Co., Ltd.

At the invitation of Milan’s ADI Design Museum, which awarded the world-renowned Golden Compasso d’Oro Award with a 70-year history and was designated as a national cultural heritage by the Italian government, the exhibition was held for about a month from April 16 to May 5. This exhibition, held under the theme of ‘Lachchil Furniture and Design’, was visited by more than 12,000 visitors during the 2024 Milan Design Week, and looked at Korea’s traditional lacquer from a new perspective, identifying Korea as an important material for future materials and living furniture. It was evaluated as showing Korean aesthetics that go beyond East and West by presenting traditional lacquerware.

In particular, by presenting Korea’s traditional technique of ‘lacquer’, a 100% natural material, as a new material that stands out in a sustainable society, it served as an opportunity to show the world the vision and potential of lacquer as a future material for living furniture. The lacquered furniture design presented in the exhibition, completed in collaboration with world-renowned Italian masters Alessandro Mendini and Stefano Giovannoni, goes beyond Koreans’ preconceptions about lacquer through the deep colors and designs achieved through lacquer, creating new shapes and styles. It captured the attention of people around the world through its colors.

‘OD Mendini Homage’ is a partition using the façade pattern (2016) planned by OCDC for Paradise Hotel in Korea and commissioned by Alessandro Mendini. In addition, Korean furniture and space designer Cho Eun-hwan, Korea’s leading lacquerware artist Jeong Hye-jo, artisan Son Dae-hyeong, an intangible cultural asset of Seoul and holder of lacquered mother-of-pearl lacquerware, and Marco Oggian, a promising young Italian designer, participated in the exhibition.

At the closing ceremony, ADI President Luciano Galimberti, world-renowned curator Rossana Orlandi, Consul Kim Tae-woo of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Milan, Yeo Hyeon-kyung of the Korea Foundation for International Affairs, Stefano Giovannoni, a representative participating artist in the exhibition, etc. This event graced the occasion.

Stefano Giovannoni, a designer who participated in this exhibition, said, “I think the collaboration with artisans in this exhibition showed an innovative integration toward trends beyond the traditional lacquer technique.” “While designing, we proposed a gradient technique and the craftsman implemented it. This is a technique that has never been attempted in traditional lacquer, and was an innovative attempt and integration of a trend different from traditional techniques,” he said.

Choi Gyeong-ran, a professor at Kookmin University (director of OCDC) who planned the exhibition, said about the meaning of this exhibition, “Through the reactions of countless people around the world, we were able to confirm that beauty is not different between the East and the West.” “We will further develop our efforts and continue to combine sustainable materials with lacquer to pursue beauty that can be communicated to the world through innovative furniture,” he said.
