To settle the question, a later international team modeled thousands of Cassini observations to analyze the precession of Mimas’s periapsis—the slow rotation of the point in its orbit where the moon passes closest to Saturn. Published in Nature, the ocean model successfully reproduced both the periapsis drift and the libration wobble, whereas the misshapen-core alternative failed to fit the combined gravitational and rotational data.

Evaluating the 25-Million-Year Timeline

The subsurface ocean is calculated to sit beneath an ice shell measuring 20 to 30 kilometres thick. Because no instrument has drilled through the ice or sampled the liquid directly, the global ocean remains a geophysical inference—the internal structure that best explains independent aspects of the moon’s motion under the laws of physics. The age estimate of less than 25 million years was determined by modeling how tidal dissipation damps orbital eccentricity, representing the degree to which the orbit departs from a circle. A long-lived present ocean would have altered the trajectory far more than observed, indicating that the liquid layer must have formed recently in geological terms.

This rapid formation timeline places the subterranean sea at a geological age younger than the India-Eurasia collision that started building the Himalayas.
