Miners Volleyball Splits Friday Doubleheader, Faces Missouri Southern Today

The Missouri S&T Miners volleyball team experienced a mixed day on Friday, securing a 3-1 victory over Christian Brothers University before falling to Northwestern Oklahoma State University in straight sets at Gibson Arena in Rolla, Missouri.

Miners Overcome Bucs in Four-Set Battle

The opening match against Christian Brothers proved to be a tightly contested affair. The first set remained neck and neck, with neither team establishing a significant lead, ultimately concluding with a 25-23 victory for S&T. Addie Schoenberger and Selin Ozdemir led the offensive charge in the first frame, each contributing four crucial kills.

The second set mirrored the first in its competitiveness, but a late 4-1 run by Christian Brothers allowed them to even the match at one set apiece.

S&T demonstrated their fighting spirit in the third set, overcoming an early 7-2 deficit with a five-point rally. Key to this turnaround were consecutive double blocks from Schoenberger and Kate Zipprich. A subsequent four-point surge propelled the Miners to a 25-21 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set saw a strong start from a trio of freshmen – Schoenberger, Elly Decker, and Avery Patton – sparking a 4-0 run. Despite a brief challenge from Christian Brothers, the Miners maintained control, hitting .353 and closing out the set 25-17 to secure the victory.

Rangers Prove Too Strong in Straight Sets

The second match against Northwestern Oklahoma State presented a different challenge. Despite erasing an early four-point deficit and briefly taking a 21-17 lead in the first set, the Miners succumbed to late errors, allowing the Rangers to rally for a 26-24 win.

Northwestern Oklahoma State dominated the second set, capitalizing on a lengthy service run by Ece Ozdemir to establish an 8-1 advantage, eventually extending their lead to 22-7. While the Miners attempted a late comeback, pulling within 24-21, they were unable to overcome the deficit and dropped the set.

The third set saw a competitive start, with kills from Decker, Schoenberger, and Ozdemir keeping S&T within striking distance at 7-6. However, further service runs from Ece Ozdemir and Jadyn Padilla allowed NWOSU to pull away, ultimately securing the set 25-12 and the match.

Offensive Leaders and Team Performance

Selin Ozdemir and Decker were the offensive standouts for the Miners across both matches, recording 18 and 16 kills, respectively. Annie Arand and Elise Mehaffy orchestrated the offense effectively, combining for 54 assists throughout the day. In the first match against Christian Brothers, the Miners showcased strong defensive play, recording an impressive 22 blocks, led by Zipprich’s team-high seven.
