Minister KN Nehru announces 24-hour water distribution program for 9 Municipal Corporations and 3 Municipalities

The Municipal Administration Minister KN Nehru has revealed that a 24-hour drinking water distribution project costing Rs. 420 crore will be executed in nine Municipal Corporations. These include Tambaram, Trichy, Tirunelveli as well as three Municipalities such as Karaikudi. The topic of municipal administration and drinking water supply department subsidy requests was debated recently in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Nehru disclosed that 24-hour drinking water supply through connections will be implemented at a cost of Rs.420 crore to benefit 5,000 to 10,000 individuals in nine Municipal Corporations and three Municipalities achieving availability of drinking water around the clock.

Additionally, various projects to improve basic amenities such as constructing nine new bus stands in Dindigul, Nagercoil, Trichy (Rangam area), Nagapattinam, Mangadu, Williputhur, Kumarapalayam, Aranthangi, Pudukottai, Thiruvarur, Ulundurpet, Padmanaphapuram, setting up 25 modern gas incinerators, 100 parks, and upgrading 50 water sources were announced. The project will also reform 400km of dirt roads into tarmac, concrete and stone roads at a cost of Rs. 299 crore, 28 new weekly and daily markets in municipal areas at a cost of Rs.123.80 crore, and installing drinking water level meters in rural and urban ground level tanks supplied by the Tamil Nadu Drinking Water Board and monitoring drinking water levels online.

Moreover, Rs. 345 crore is allotted for drinking water projects in 20 municipalities including Bennagaram and Kattumannar Kovil, Rs. 25 crore for upgrading bus stands in ten municipalities such as Andhiyur, Emalur, Aduthurai and Chatankulam. The project also covers the upgrading of buildings in 139 schools affiliated to Chennai Corporation at a cost of Rs.50 crore, restoring the Perungudi garbage dump complex, and setting up an eco-park at a cost of Rs.50 crore. Community welfare centers are to be established in seven constituencies-Rayapuram, Harpuram, Chepakkam-Thiruval Likkeni, Ayaar Lampu, Velachery, and Alandur-at Rs. 5 crore each.

Other important points to be highlighted include updating the Archeological Park with a budget of Rs. 42.45 crore, analyzing the possibility of extending drinking water supply and sewerage services by the Chennai Water Board to local bodies situated in the Chennai metropolitan area beyond the Chennai Municipal Corporation limits, and carrying out works to prevent mixing of sewage at 23 places in the Koovam River in the Chennai Corporation at a cost of Rs. 50 crore.

A debate was held yesterday in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on the municipal administration and drinking water supply department subsidy request. Minister Nehru announced that:

5000 to 10000 drinking water in 9 Municipal Corporations namely Trichy, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Vellore, Cuddalore, Tambaram, Erode, Nagercoil and 3 Municipalities namely Karaikudi, Pudukottai, Rajapalayam in order to achieve 24 hours availability of drinking water in all Municipal Corporations and Municipalities. 24-hour drinking water supply through connections will be implemented at a cost of Rs.420 crore.

Dindigul, Nagercoil, Trichy (Rangam area) 3 Municipal Corporations, Nagapattinam, Mangadu, Williputhur, Kumarapalayam, Aranthangi, Pudukottai, Thiruvarur, Ulundurpet, Padmanaphapuram in 9 new bus stands will be constructed at a cost of Rs.174 crore.

25 new modern gas incinerators will be set up at a cost of Rs.52.50 crore. 100 parks will be set up at a cost of Rs.60.90 crores in the Corporations and Municipalities. 50 water bodies will be upgraded at a cost of Rs.42 crore. 400 km of dirt roads will be converted into tarmac, concrete and stone roads at a cost of Rs 299 crore. 28 new weekly and daily markets will be set up in municipal areas at a cost of Rs.123.80 crore. Drinking water projects will be carried out at a cost of Rs.345 crore in 20 municipalities including Bennagaram and Kattumannar Kovil. Bus stands will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 25 crore in 10 municipalities including Andhiyur, Emalur, Aduthurai and Chatankulam.

Drinking water level meters will be installed in rural and urban ground level tanks supplied by the Tamil Nadu Drinking Water Board and the drinking water level will be monitored online. 7 lakh drinking water samples will be tested to ensure safe drinking water supply.

Buildings of 139 schools affiliated to Chennai Corporation will be upgraded at a cost of Rs.50 crore. The Perungudi garbage dump complex will be restored and an eco-park will be set up at a cost of Rs.50 crore. Community welfare centers will be set up at a cost of Rs 5 crore each in 7 constituencies namely Rayapuram, Harpuram, Chepakkam-Thiruval Likkeni, Ayaar Lampu, Velachery and Alandur. The Archaeological Park will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 42.45 crore.

A detailed study will be carried out on the possibility of extending drinking water supply and sewerage services by the Chennai Water Board to the local bodies located in the Chennai metropolitan area beyond the Chennai Municipal Corporation limits. Works to prevent mixing of sewage at 23 places in the Koovam River in the Chennai Corporation will be carried out at a cost of Rs 50 crore.
