Date: [Current Date]

In a bid to tackle rising security concerns and a sense of lawlessness in the southern region, the Ministry of National Security and the police have announced a comprehensive plan aimed at strengthening governance in the area. The plan, which is pending approval of the proposed budgets, was recently revealed by “Maariv”, shedding light on the strategies being implemented.

One of the key components of the plan is the recruitment of 600 new policemen who will be assigned to the southern region. These additional officers will bolster the forces of the HSM (Hebrew acronym for Special Patrol Unit), the Yoav unit, and help establish special patrols to combat criminal activities such as illegal possession of weapons and polygamy parties.

Despite the proposed plan, opinions among residents in the south regarding the Minister of National Security’s initiative remain divided. Omer Finny, council chief, expressed his concerns about the worsening situation in the Negev and emphasized the urgent need for immediate action. Finny acknowledged the importance of the protection law promoted by Minister Itamar Ben Gvir but highlighted the insufficiency of these measures in bringing about significant change.

Finny also pointed out that the recruitment of new police officers needs to be expedited, as the current situation on the ground continues to deteriorate. He suggested that the amendment to the minimum punishment for possession of weapons and theft of vehicles should also be revised to further deter criminal activities.

Hanan Alsana, a lawyer managing the southern branch of the organization Mekeh Ma’aki – Lawyers for Social Justice, noted the importance of addressing the issue of polygamy in the region. Alsana argued that the phenomenon of polygamy has severe consequences on the mental health of women and children. To effectively combat this, she stressed the need for financial empowerment and personal security measures for women, as well as support from society and the establishment.

The plan proposed by the Ministry of National Security and the police is the latest effort to restore governance and security in the southern region. However, it remains to be seen how quickly these initiatives will be implemented and whether they will successfully address the ongoing challenges in the area.
