Minnesota Upsets No. 15 Iowa to Regain Floyd of Rosedale Trophy

Minnesota kicker Luke Drzewiecki drilled a 46-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Gophers to a 13-10 victory over No. 15 Iowa on October 24, 2026, at Huntington Bank Stadium. The walk-off win secured the Floyd of Rosedale rivalry trophy for the hosts.

The matchup was billed as a deciding test for an Iowa team carrying national ranking aspirations into Minneapolis, but the contest quickly deteriorated into a punishing defensive struggle. The Hawkeyes walked into hostile territory and paid for a lackadaisical performance, dropping to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten conference play after a game defined by uncharacteristic errors and offensive paralysis.

How Minnesota Captured the Floyd of Rosedale Trophy

The visiting Hawkeyes opened the game by receiving the kickoff, only to see their first possession stall. Disaster struck immediately when special teams miscues allowed the Gophers to block a punt, giving Minnesota possession at the Iowa 13-yard line. While the Gophers could not punch it into the end zone, Luke Drzewiecki opened the scoring with a 31-yard field goal.

Minnesota extended its lead in the third quarter through a grueling 10-play, 71-yard drive. Running back Darius Taylor took a direct snap and pushed across for a 1-yard touchdown after an offsides penalty. That score built a 10-3 cushion that appeared safe given how both offenses were operating.

Yet the Gophers nearly squandered the advantage in the fourth quarter. After forcing back-to-back punts, Minnesota’s offense stalled out, giving Iowa new life. Following a short punt downed at the Iowa 2-yard line, the Hawkeyes stunned the sellout crowd of 53,004 by marching 98 yards in four plays. Quarterback Hank Brown hooked up with Tony Diaz on a 57-yard gain, then found Reece Vander Zee for a 37-yard touchdown pass with 3:46 remaining to knot the game at 10-10.

Minnesota got the ball back and Drake Lindsey connected with Jalen Smith on a crucial 39-yard pass play on third down from the Minnesota 33 with 39 seconds left, positioning Drzewiecki for the game-winning 46-yard kick as time expired.

You get a blocked punt right off the bat and end up with four turnovers, it’s really unrealistic to think that you’re going to win a conference game doing that. So that’s not good. Then to compound that, we had four loose balls, which I think is very uncharacteristic of us.

Iowa Offense Unravels as Quarterbacks Struggle

Iowa’s offense unraveled completely under the weight of self-inflicted wounds. Jeremy Hecklinski started his second consecutive game under center, completing 9 of 16 passes for 62 yards with an interception. Mid-way through the second quarter, head coach Kirk Ferentz pulled the plug on Hecklinski after a costly turnover at the Minnesota 2-yard line where linebacker Joey Gerlach intercepted the ball.

Hank Brown entered in relief after recovering from a shoulder injury suffered against Ohio State on October 3. Brown finished 11-for-21 for 136 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The rotation failed to establish any rhythm, compounding an afternoon where Iowa’s ground game was handcuffed.

Team Statistics Iowa Hawkeyes Minnesota Golden Gophers
Total Offense 288 yards 209 yards

Kamari Moulton, who entered the contest as the Big Ten’s leading rusher averaging 103.8 yards per game, managed just 22 yards before departing in the second quarter with an undisclosed injury. Without him, the Hawkeyes mustered just 90 yards on the ground against a Minnesota defense that allowed 464 yards to Purdue two weeks prior.

Throughout this week I know I prepared as if I was a starter, even though it wasn’t that way this week. When my number was called, I was thankful for that opportunity, but ultimately, as a quarterback, our job is to go out and win the game. And we weren’t able to accomplish that.

Historical Trophy Sweep for Minnesota

The victory triggered a wild field storm from the home fans, mirroring celebrations after an upset win over Michigan earlier in the month. The result put Minnesota in rare historical company: the program now holds all three of its primary rivalry trophies—Floyd of Rosedale, the Little Brown Jug, and Paul Bunyan’s Axe—simultaneously for the first time since October 1978.

Head coach P.J. Fleck improved to 2-8 against Kirk Ferentz since 2017 while capturing his first home win over the Hawkeyes since 2014. Minnesota relied on motivational words from former U.S. hockey coach Herb Brooks before kickoff, channeling the spirit of the 1980 Miracle on Ice.

This one is really special. You hear about it constantly, what we haven’t done. That’s a pretty common theme here at the University of Minnesota.

Both teams face immediate tests as the calendar turns. Minnesota travels to face No. 6 Indiana on October 31, while Iowa returns home to host Wisconsin on the same date.
