Miss Universe Crowned in Controversy: Drug Trafficking Allegations Rock Pageant President
A whirlwind of accusations, from favoritism to organized crime, has engulfed the recent Miss Universe competition, casting a dark shadow over the victory of Mexico’s Fatima Bosch. just days after being crowned, the pageant’s president, businessman raúl Rocha,is facing an arrest warrant related to allegations of leading a drug, weapons, and fuel trafficking network, escalating a scandal that has reached the highest levels of the Mexican government.
The controversy began simmering promptly following Bosch’s win last Friday, with critics alleging preferential treatment due to her family’s wealth and political connections. Bosch herself acknowledged a tense exchange with a local organizer in Thailand, the competition’s host country, stating, “He called me stupid. It is unacceptable. We are empowered women, no one can silence our voice.” Prior to the crowning, the selection process was already marred by internal dissent, with two of eight jury members resigning, one claiming an “improvised jury” was formed with significant conflicts of interest.
However, the situation dramatically escalated this week with the revelation of the arrest warrant. A federal judge in Querétaro issued the warrant at the request of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO), accusing Rocha of orchestrating a network smuggling hydrocarbons, weapons, and drugs across the Mexico-Guatemala border. According to the inquiry, the illicit goods were transported via the Usumacinta River and then through pipelines to Querétaro, with the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel and La Unión Tepito identified as buyers.
Rocha vehemently denies the allegations, stating,”It is completely false that I have an arrest warrant.” He acknowledged a pre-existing contract between one of his companies and Pemex, the Mexican state oil company, worth almost 750 million pesos, but defended it by stating it was signed in 2023, before his acquisition of 50% of the Miss Universe Organization for $16 million through his company, Legacy holding Group. The timing of the contract, coupled with the fact that Bernardo Bosch, the winner’s father, has been a manager at Pemex for nearly three decades, has fueled further scrutiny.
The scandal has even drawn the attention of President Claudia Sheinbaum, who initially defended Bosch’s victory but has since urged the FGR to clarify the situation. “If there is an investigation into this person, then the Prosecutor’s Office has to inform; today it is indeed in the media, but it has to be informed,” she stated at a recent press conference. The Attorney General’s Office has confirmed the ongoing investigation, stating they are “collecting additional data related to the investigation folders.”
Adding to the complexity, the arrest warrant reportedly includes more than a dozen individuals, including prosecutor Mari Carmen RamÃrez RodrÃguez, known as “The Prosecutor,” and commander Paul Manrique miranda, referred to as “The Commander,” both from the FEMDO. This raises serious questions about potential corruption within the vrey agencies tasked with upholding the law.
The unfolding events represent a significant challenge for the Mexican government, especially as it prioritizes combating fuel smuggling – or huachicol – following recent revelations of trafficking networks within the Navy. Some reports even suggest Rocha may be negotiating a deal with the FGR to become a protected witness.
