Search Intensifies for Missing German Backpacker in Western Australia
A large-scale search is underway in Western Australia for 26-year-old Carolina Wilga, who has been missing for over a week while on a backpacking trip.
Authorities in Australia have issued a public appeal for information as the search continues for Wilga, a German national last seen on June 29th. The investigation gained a new focus on Thursday with the discovery of her van near Karroun Hill, approximately 300 km (186 miles) northeast of Perth.
Van Found with Mechanical Issues
The West Australian daily reported that Wilga’s vehicle was found unattended. Initial assessments suggest the van experienced mechanical issues, prompting a concentrated search effort in the surrounding area. A photograph of Wilga’s van, released by Western Australia Police, is being circulated to aid in public awareness.
Last Known Sighting and Travel Plans
Wilga was last observed at a general store in Beacon, a small agricultural town northeast of Perth. “Carolina departed that area about five minutes later and has not been seen or heard from since,” stated a homicide squad detective senior sergeant during a press conference.
Authorities revealed that Wilga had ambitious travel plans, intending to explore both remote regions of Western Australia and the eastern coastline. This broad itinerary presents a significant challenge for search teams, potentially requiring coverage of a vast geographical area.
Investigation Remains Open
While investigators have found no evidence of foul play at this time, all possible avenues are being explored. A senior official emphasized that the investigation is “very broad,” and Wilga’s disappearance is considered “unexplained” and “concerning.”
Wilga’s phone is currently switched off, raising further concerns. Local media reports indicate she maintained regular communication with her family in Germany prior to her disappearance.
Increased Police Presence in Wheatbelt Region
In response to the discovery of the van, additional police resources have been deployed to the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, where the vehicle was located. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding Wilga’s whereabouts to come forward.
The search for Carolina Wilga continues, with authorities remaining hopeful for a positive outcome as they meticulously investigate all leads in this developing case.
