Search Intensifies for Missing 9-Year-Old Melodee Buzzard, Mother Refuses Cooperation

The search for 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard has taken a critical turn, with authorities now believing the Lompoc, California, girl was last seen on October 7, 2025, and may have been driven to Nebraska by her mother, Ashlee buzzard. The case has ignited community concern as Buzzard is reportedly refusing to cooperate with law enforcement investigating her daughter’s whereabouts and condition.

Narrowing the search Window

When Melodee was initially reported missing by school officials last Tuesday, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office initiated a search. Investigators now believe Lee Buzzard may have traveled with Melodee in a white Chevrolet Malibu – rental license plate 9MNG101 – to locations outside of Santa Barbara County, possibly reaching as far as the state of Nebraska. The vehicle is no longer in Buzzard’s possession, according to authorities. Detectives contacted Buzzard at her Vandenberg Village home last Tuesday, but Melodee was not present.

Family Concerns and Limited Information

Family members on Melodee’s father’s side report they haven’t seen the girl in approximately four and a half years and have been denied visitation by her mother. The most recent photograph of Melodee available to authorities is two years old. Melodee’s father, Rubiell Meza, tragically died in a motorcycle accident shortly after her birth in 2016. Following his death,Buzzard relocated from Santa Maria, where she had been living with Meza and his mother, according to one of Melodee’s aunts,Vicky Shade.

“She just kept [Melodee] away from us and then she up and moved,” Shade stated. “She wouldn’t let us see her.”

Enrollment in Independent Study and Subsequent Disappearance

In August, Buzzard enrolled melodee in an independent study program with the lompoc Unified School District. After Melodee failed to collect her assignments for several weeks, the district contacted her mother and subsequently alerted law enforcement, initiating the current search.

The FBI announced it’s involvement in the search on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, prompting a hopeful response from Melodee’s family. A relative, Lizabeth Meza, expressed optimism knowing additional teams were actively searching for her niece. The Meza family has been distributing flyers throughout Lompoc, Guadalupe, and the Five Cities region of San Luis Obispo county.

Community Response and Investigative Caution

Signs reading “Where is Melodee?” have been posted near Buzzard’s Vandenberg Village home, where dozens of community members gathered Sunday afternoon to pray for the girl and seek answers from her mother, as reported by local television station KSBY. The case has generated meaningful public interest and speculation, with many taking to the internet to share theories.

The Sheriff’s Office has urged the public not to conduct independent searches or investigations, emphasizing that such efforts could inadvertently hinder ongoing investigative work.

Financial History and Educational Background

Court records reveal ashlee Buzzard filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in 2017 and currently faces multiple debt collection cases. Prior to Melodee’s enrollment in the independent study program, detectives believe she was homeschooled for several years. However, the California Department of Education has no record of Buzzard filing the required private school affidavit for homeschooling.
