Search Intensifies for Missing Hang-Glider Off NSW Coast

A large-scale search operation is underway for a missing hang-glider in the waters off the NSW Mid North Coast. Emergency services were alerted on Thursday afternoon after the pilot could not be located near Elizabeth Beach, south of Forster.

Emergency crews launched a rapid response after receiving reports of the missing glider. A volunteer crew was quickly assembled, and the rescue vessel Forster 30 was deployed to begin the initial search.

The search resumed early friday morning, bolstered by the addition of water police and another volunteer crew alongside Forster 30. According to a statement from Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Courtney Greenslade, Forster 30 conducted a thorough search late thursday, covering the area from Seven Mile Beach to Elizabeth Beach before pausing operations at 8:30 p.m.

Did you know?-Hang gliding relies on rising air currents, and pilots often fly near the coastline to take advantage of sea breezes. Proper training and equipment checks are vital for safety.

Currently, Forster 30 is executing a parallel-line search pattern in coordination with water police, extending from lindeman Cove in the north to Blueys head in the south. Communications throughout the operation are being supported by radio operators from Marine Rescue Forster Tuncurry.

“The search resumed this morning with water police, a volunteer crew and a rescue vessel,” Greenslade confirmed.

Pro tip:-When participating in water-based activities, always inform someone of your plans, including your route and expected return time. Carry appropriate safety equipment, such as a personal locator beacon.

While conditions are presently favorable, authorities are bracing for a change in weather. Forecasts predict increasing 20-knot winds and a swell of 1.5 to 2.5 meters later today, potentially complicating the ongoing efforts. The evolving conditions underscore the urgency of locating the missing pilot.

As of Friday afternoon, the pilot remains missing. The search is ongoing, with authorities prioritizing the area between Lindeman cove and Blueys Head. The operation involves a coordinated effort between Marine Rescue NSW, water police, and volunteer crews. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
