Miyazaki mango, one of the most expensive mangoes in the world, sold for Rs 2.70 lakh a kg in the international market last year. These mangoes are branded and sold as ‘Thio-no-Tomago’ or ‘X of Sunshine’. It does not turn yellow or green, but changes from purple to dark red when ripe.

Japan is the largest producer of Miyazaki mangoes. Miyazaki mangoes are mainly grown in Miyazaki, Kyushu Province, Japan. Production of this mango began in Miyazaki in the 70s and 80s. The climate in the city is favorable for the production of this mango. They are cultivated in this city due to its warm weather, prolonged sunshine and abundant rainfall.

A couple in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh have planted two Miyazaki mango trees in their garden. They are said to have received saplings from someone who traveled to Chennai during the train journey. By the time they got the saplings, they had no idea it was the most expensive mango in the world. Then they discovered that the color of the mango was different and eventually they found out that they had grown the most expensive mangoes in the world and now they have named those mangoes as ‘Tamini’.

They have now hired four security guards and six dogs after the robbers allegedly tried to steal two mangoes. Last year, a businessman had offered Rs 21,000 for a kilo of mangoes. But they are said to have denied it. They claim to offer the “first mango” to God.
