Gator Bowl Buzz Builds as Missouri and Virginia Converge on Jacksonville Beach

The excitement surrounding the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl reached a fever pitch Friday as the University of Missouri and the University of Virginia brought their team spirit to Jacksonville Beach, Florida, for their annual bowl game pep rallies. Both teams are set to face off Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at EverBank Stadium.

The festivities kicked off with Virginia at 5:30 p.m., followed by Missouri at 6:15 p.m. at the Jacksonville Beach Seawalk Pavilion, marking the final public appearances for both teams before the highly anticipated game.

Local Pride and Fan Enthusiasm

The event held particular significance for local residents like Latanya Wynn-Hall, a University of Virginia alumna and member of the UVA Club in Jacksonville, Class of 1989. “It’s absolutely wonderful because Virginia doesn’t get to Florida too often,” Wynn-Hall expressed. “I’m just proud of my school, proud of my alumni, proud of the football team, just proud of the program.”

The bowl game also presented a travel opportunity for dedicated fans like Lance Privett of Missouri. “It’s great. We love to travel over the country and just an amazing opportunity. We’re happy to go cheer on our team,” he said.

The pep rallies transformed Jacksonville Beach into a vibrant display of team colors – blue and orange for Virginia, and black and gold for Missouri. The festive atmosphere, enhanced by the backdrop of Deck the Chairs, drew in even those without a direct connection to either team.

“It’s just the spirit of it and the time of year makes everyone come together,” noted a Duval resident, Duane Ferguson. “Everyone is so happy… at the end of the day, everyone goes home happy just being here in Jacksonville, Florida.”

Beyond the Game: Community Impact and Coach Reflections

The Gator Bowl experience extended beyond the gridiron for both teams. Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz emphasized the unique opportunity of spending Christmas in Jacksonville. “Bowl games are really defined by two things — the location, No. 1, and obviously spending Christmas in Jacksonville,” Drinkwitz stated. “I was on this beach for the first time in my life on Christmas Day, and I thought what an awesome experience that has been.”

Missouri enters the game aiming for a third consecutive season with nine wins, recalling a previous victory over Alabama at the same venue. “The last time we were here was the last time that we beat Alabama. So it is a significant piece of our history and the accomplishments that we’ve had,” Drinkwitz added.

For Virginia head coach Tony Elliott, Jacksonville holds personal significance, stemming from his 11 seasons as an assistant coach at Clemson, where he mentored current Jacksonville Jaguars stars Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne. Elliott and Drinkwitz participated in a fireside chat at WJCT Friday morning, where Elliott reminisced about his former players. When asked who he would invite to Christmas dinner, he responded, “The first would be the big man upstairs because that’s his birthday and the real reason for the season, just to put everything in perspective. Then I haven’t seen Trevor and Travis in a long time — I think it’s been about 5 years, so I would invite them over just to celebrate with us. We are in there playing in their venue in their hometown, and then just to help our team understand what it’s like to play in the postseason because we’ve been approaching this game like a playoff game.”

The game represents a significant milestone for the Virginia program, as the Cavaliers pursue their first-ever 11-win season. “I got fifth-year seniors on my roster that have never been close to a bowl game,” Elliott explained. “We talked about the objective was that we wanted to be playing where its warm in December – that’s when you’ve made it to the type of bowl that you want to be in.”

Community Engagement and Game Day Details

Prior to Friday’s pep rallies, both teams engaged with the local community, touring Naval Station Mayport and visiting with the Dream Team – 11 local youth battling life-threatening illnesses, through a partnership with Dreams Come True.

Fans attending the game can enjoy the TaxSlayer Tailgate at the Flex Field from 3:30-7 p.m., featuring inflatable games and photo opportunities. The event is free and does not require a game ticket. Stadium parking lots will open at 2:30 p.m., and stadium gates will open at 5:30 p.m.

The TaxSlayer Gator Bowl promises to be a memorable event, extending its impact far beyond the final score.
