In such a scenario, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the state chief ministers yesterday. Basically, Prime Minister Modi suddenly started talking about the petrol price hike at this consultative meeting on corona prevention measures. Blaming some states, including Tamil Nadu, for the rise in petrol prices, Prime Minister Modi urged state governments to reduce taxes on petrol.
The Tamil Nadu government has strongly condemned Prime Minister Modi’s speech. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has denounced the Modi-led central government as the real culprit behind the petrol price hike and blamed it in vain. Stalin also hinted that the public would know who would raise petrol prices after the election without raising petrol prices at all during the election. Moreover, Chief Minister Stalin has accused the Modi government of covering up the whole pumpkin issue in the case of petrol prices.
Speaking on the occasion, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister PDR Palanivel Thiagarajan said that he could not accept the central government’s claim that no state had reduced the value added tax on petrol and diesel and that history would tell that the DMK government had reduced the tax on petrol whenever it came to power.
Thus, the Central Government and the Government of Tamil Nadu alternately blame the increase in petrol prices. Trapped in between are ordinary people. Bringing petrol-diesel under GST is expected to alleviate the problem to some extent. Will the federal government do that? Will the Tamil Nadu government guide it? Have to wait and see !!
