Slate Digital Unveils ML-2A: A Refined Modeling Microphone for Modern Studios
Table of Contents
Slate Digital has introduced the ML-2A, the latest iteration in its line of modeling microphones, offering producers and engineers a versatile tool for capturing a wide range of sounds. The new microphone delivers a factory-matched pair of small-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphones designed to integrate seamlessly with Slate’s Virtual Microphone System (VMS), providing access to an extensive library of vintage and modern microphone emulations.
Expanding the Virtual Microphone System
Building upon the foundation of the original ML-2, the ML-2A boasts upgraded hardware, an improved dynamic range, and enhanced sonic detail. This makes it well-suited for precise instrument capture in both mono and stereo configurations. Each pair is factory-matched and includes a mounting bar to facilitate accurate stereo setups.
Like Slate Digital’s ML-1A and previous ML-2 systems, the ML-2A relies on the VMS plugin to recreate the characteristics of numerous microphones. Once connected to the software, the ML-2A transforms into a flexible “mic locker,” allowing users to audition and switch between different microphone models during the mixing process to achieve the ideal sound for each project. The system’s zero-latency processing also enables real-time monitoring for contemporary producers.
Built for Demanding Recording Environments
The ML-2A is engineered to handle high sound pressure levels, up to 156 dB SPL, making it suitable for a variety of recording scenarios. A built-in -20 dB pad allows for close-miking of loud sources like drums and guitar amplifiers without introducing distortion. Additionally, an onboard 80 Hz low-cut filter helps to minimize unwanted low-frequency rumble.
The included VMS plugin currently features 27 microphone models, encompassing a broad spectrum of studio staples. These include dynamic microphones such as the S-57 and S-421, ribbon models like the S-121, small-diaphragm condensers including the S-451 and S-222, and large-diaphragm condensers such as the S-414 and S-67. Users can blend models, adjust proximity effect, and add coloration or vintage saturation using Slate’s Virtual Preamps Collection, creating a fully in-the-box front-end recording workflow.
Streamlined Access and Value
Slate Digital is now shipping every ML-2A with its complete set of mic models included, eliminating the need for separate purchases of additional mic packs. Buyers will also receive a three-month subscription to the Slate Digital Complete Access Bundle, which provides access to over 150 plugins from Slate Digital, SSL, and Harrison Audio.
“With the ML-2A, we set out to redefine and enhance what the original ML-2 offered,” stated Chad Carrier, Slate Digital’s VP of Products. “Optimized for both mono and stereo instrument recording, it’s powerful, versatile and perfect for producers and engineers who want access to the ultimate mic locker.”
The ML-2A is available for purchase now, priced at $399/€399/£299 excluding tax. The microphone will make its global debut at the 2026 NAMM Show (January 22-24) at the Slate Digital booth (18303).
