New York Jewish communities honor MLK Jr.’s legacy with interfaith dinners, service opportunities

This weekend, Jewish communities across New York City will join in celebrating the life and legacy of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a variety of events and service opportunities.

As part of the national holiday on Monday, January 15th, celebrating what would have been King’s 95th birthday, Jewish congregations throughout the city will be hosting interfaith Shabbat dinners, social justice discussions, and screening films related to King’s work and black-Jewish relations.

One of the events set to take place is the annual MLK Shabbat service at the Temple Emanu-El and the Main Synagogue, featuring guest speakers and discussions on King’s legacy and social justice advocacy.

In addition to the religious services, several organizations are offering service opportunities for volunteers to participate in. Repair the World, a volunteering and service organization for the Jewish community, will be hosting several opportunities throughout the weekend, including packing care kits for immigrants and preparing garden beds in urban gardens.

The UJA-New York Federation will also be hosting the annual MLK Day of Service on Monday, offering dozens of volunteer opportunities throughout the city, from cleaning parks to preparing care packages for immigrants and those in need.

Furthermore, film screenings will also be available for those looking to explore and learn more about the history and impact of civil rights activism. The Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan will be screening “Rustin,” a biopic of Bayard Rustin, architect of the 1963 March on Washington and a trailblazing advocate for gay rights.

The New York Jewish Film Festival will also be screening two documentaries in honor of MLK Day, offering audiences the chance to delve into the history of racism and anti-Semitism as well as the efforts of Rabbi Tamar Menashe to build solidarity between black and Jewish communities.

The weekend’s events and service opportunities aim to honor Dr. King’s memory and continue to promote his legacy of social justice and equality. The events are open to all members of the community, providing a meaningful way to honor and celebrate the important work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
