Two distinct modding projects have transformed classic games from top-down isometric perspectives into first-person and virtual reality experiences. A developer known as Drelvak used the DevilutionX engine rebuild on October 8 to turn the original 1997 release of Diablo into a first-person dungeon crawler, while a separate VR adaptation builds on a 3D camera tool for Diablo II: Resurrected.
Modders are actively rewriting how players experience decades-old action role-playing games by stripping away fixed isometric camera angles. Two videos released within eleven days of each other have pushed the original 1997 title and Diablo II: Resurrected into ground-level views, drawing a combined total of well over one million views across platforms.
DevilutionX and the 1997 First-Person Diablo Conversion
The first project transforms the original 1997 release into an eye-level adventure. Published on October 8 by a modder posting as Drelvak, the build has already surpassed 155,000 views. Unlike the newer sequel, the original title was built entirely from 2D sprites shot from a fixed angle, containing no actual 3D geometry for a virtual camera to travel through.
That technical hurdle was cleared by building upon DevilutionX, an open-source engine rebuild derived from community decompilation work. Because DevilutionX hands developers the actual engine source code rather than a locked binary, modders can alter perspective while adapting the legacy artwork. The resulting project maintains the core balance and mechanics of the original game while utilizing AI tools for coding assistance, giving the dark dungeons a visual similarity to classic Doom titles.

Camera Rebuilding in Diablo II Resurrected
Pressing the F12 key enables the camera adjustments, while the mouse wheel zooms and the middle button handles rotation. Adapting the perspective required recalculating projectile paths and entirely rebuilding lighting and shadow behavior so the graphics hold up when viewed at close range. However, this approach collides directly with Blizzard’s file integrity checker. Because the mod runs inside the official retail client, activating it triggers safety checks that crash the game after approximately one minute unless workarounds involving potentially unsafe cheat tools are applied.

I made a VR mod for Diablo II: Resurrected: first-person view will be available, true stereo 3D, and your hands are tied to motion controllers. The hero’s body turns with you.

Blizzard Schedules Fifth Mainline Game for Spring 2029
These fan projects unfold as Blizzard Entertainment prepares for the future of the franchise, having scheduled the release of a fifth mainline installment for the spring of 2029. Industry figures have noted that the upcoming official title may draw inspiration from earlier entries, with Game Director Joe Shely promising a return to the methodical gameplay pacing established by the second game.
While the first-person modification built on DevilutionX operates independently through an open-source engine and remains stable for installation, the retail-dependent variants highlight the ongoing friction between community modding efforts and strict digital rights management. Until technical workarounds bypass integrity checks without relying on prohibited software tools, ground-level exploration of the sequel remains an experimental demonstration.
