Latvian Champions Face Fifth-Place Battle After Continental Cup Loss
The Latvian champion team, “Mogo”/RSU, will compete for fifth place in the IIHF Continental Cup after suffering a 2-3 penalty shootout defeat to Polish team Katowice GKS on Thursday. This loss follows a 0-4 defeat to the host team, Nottingham “Panthers,” on Wednesday, effectively ending their bid for a championship title in the prestigious European ice hockey tournament.
“Mogo”/RSU found themselves trailing early in the Group A match, with Jean Dupuy of Katowice scoring just 55 seconds into the game. The Latvian team managed to equalize late in the second period, thanks to a power-play goal from Krister Anson in the 35th minute.
The third period saw a flurry of action, with Dupuy again putting Katowice ahead. Though, Gints Meija quickly responded for “Mogo”/RSU, leveling the score less than two minutes after conceding. Despite a tied score at the end of regulation and a scoreless overtime, Katowice ultimately prevailed in the penalty shootout. Nils Feņenko and Rudolfs Maslovskis successfully converted their shots for the Latvian side, but goalkeeper Mežsargs could only save three of the six attempts faced.
The team’s performance in the second round of the tournament contrasts sharply with their dominant run in the first round, where they secured first place with three consecutive wins.Their subsequent record of two wins in three games was enough to qualify for the finals, but not enough to advance beyond the group stage.
Elsewhere in the tournament, in Group B, Herning’s “Blue Fox,” featuring Oskars Cibulskas and Jānis Fecers, lost to Eskemen’s “Torpedo” from Kazakhstan with a score of 2-6. This followed a 4-1 victory over Angers “Duc” on Wednesday.
The IIHF Continental Cup, the second-largest European ice hockey club tournament, features 14 teams competing in a tiered ranking system. Following the conclusion of the group games, teams will compete for placement in a series of matches.
“Mogo”/RSU will now focus on securing a fifth-place finish, with their final match scheduled for Saturday. On Friday, Katowice and Nottingham will face off in the final group game to determine their advancement in the competition.
