According to a recent report by Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP), Malaysian lawmaker Yu Ka Siong said, “(Monk Nujin’s performance) is a misconception about Buddhist values and teachings,” and added, “In order to respect his divinity, we should not notify the Immigration Department, the police, etc. of Monk Nujin’s performance.” “I appeal to the Minister of Home Affairs to instruct us to block entry,” he said.
It has been reported that several complaints regarding this performance were also received by the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM). The president of the Malaysian Chinese Association pointed out, “Monk Nujin’s actions hurt the Buddhist community, which is celebrating Vesak Day (a festival commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha) two weeks later.”
In the end, the performance in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia scheduled for the 21st was cancelled.
Seongho Yoon did not directly state his position on this controversy, but replaced it with a video of the performance.
In the domestic Buddhist community, the response to Monk Nujin is good. The bald-headed character became a hot topic when he served as an EDM party DJ dressed as a monk at the Lotus Lantern Festival held in May last year. The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism also presented a DJ headset, saying, “Monk Nujin played a significant role in promoting new and young Buddhism to young people.”
