A Hungarian man was arrested in Myanmar following an international arrest warrant issued over allegations of sexual violence against a young acquaintance two years ago, reports indicate.
The man fled Hungary after learning he faced a potential nine-year prison sentence and was brought back “wrapped in a blanket,” according to sources. He had befriended a colleague and regularly visited his family, reportedly gaining the trust of the colleague’s young daughter, who referred to him as “father,” stated Péter László Hajnal, spokesman of the Pest County Prosecutor’s Office.
Did you know? International arrest warrants, like the one issued in this case, are typically issued through Interpol, facilitating cooperation between law enforcement agencies worldwide.
The alleged assault occurred while the man was living in monoro and staying as a guest in his colleague’s home. The girl allegedly snuggled into the man’s bed, and he later sexually assaulted her. An investigation and charges followed. His lawyer claims the man’s actions were reckless. After learning of the potential nine-year sentence, he sold his possessions and traveled to Fiji, intending to establish a motel and boat tour business.
However, his boat ran aground, and he eventually reached Myanmar. While there, he was hospitalized, which led to the revelation of the outstanding warrant. According to his lawyer, the man returned to Hungary due to illness, claiming conditions in the Myanmar jail were unsanitary-with 80 people reportedly sharing a cell and drinking rusty water. The court has since ordered his arrest.
