Monster Hunter Wilds DLC & FPS Boost: Reddit Claims

by Priyanka Patel

Gamers are discovering a bizarre quirk in Monster Hunter Wilds: owning more downloadable content (DLC) may actually improve the game’s performance. A recent report suggests the game runs significantly smoother-jumping from around 30 to 50-60 frames per second-when all DLC is purchased, leading some to suspect a strange, unintentional incentive to spend more money.

Is Capcom unintentionally punishing players who haven’t bought all the extra content?

  • Monster Hunter Wilds appears to run better for players who own all DLC.
  • A mod that fakes DLC ownership boosts framerates, confirming a performance link.
  • Capcom has been notified of the issue, and a fix is potentially in the works.

The discovery began on the Monster Hunter subreddit, where user de_Tylmarande-a veteran of optimizing Capcom’s RE Engine, having previously assisted with Dragon’s Dogma 2 performance-noticed a peculiar anomaly. While testing the game, they found that logging into a friend’s Steam account, which had all Wilds DLC purchased, resulted in a dramatically smoother experience.

Upon returning to their own account, where DLC was missing, the performance issues immediately returned. De_Tylmarande theorizes that Monster Hunter Wilds includes an “insanely crooked and aggressive DLC ownership check function,” not for anti-cheat purposes, but simply to verify DLC purchases.

To test this, de_Tylmarande utilized a mod to trick the game into believing they owned all available DLC. The results were striking. Without the mod, the game struggled to maintain 30 frames per second. With the mod active, framerates soared to between 50 and 60 FPS.

“And that is when I put two and two together,” de_Tylmarande wrote in their Reddit post. “Yes, you understood correctly. And if you didn’t, I will say it directly – the more DLC you own, the better performance you get in the game.”

Monster Hunter Wilds has faced criticism since its release, with numerous players voicing performance concerns in online reviews. While it’s unlikely this issue is intentional-a intentional “pay-for-performance” scheme-the situation is nonetheless unsettling.

De_Tylmarande has reportedly contacted Capcom to alert them to the problem, and a fix may be on the horizon. We h
