Candice Renoir, Tomorrow belongs to us, Such a big sun… These television series are all filmed in Hérault, on exterior locations and in studios that the channels have created on site. Within two years, other series and cinema films could join them, because the departmental offering in terms of filming will expand with, on the one hand, the arrival of a private investor and, on the other hand, a reinforced commitment from France Télévisions in its existing studios.

On the private side, it is the local real estate groups GGL and Spag who are embarking on the adventure and investing 200 million euros in the creation of Pics Studios, in Saint-Gély-du-Fesc, on the outskirts of Montpellier. A building permit for a cinema center, covering almost 15 hectares, must be submitted before the end of the year. It will include film sets and a training center. “We launched the idea four years ago, specifies land developer Alain Guiraudon [l’un des “G” de GGL]. We are investing to host French and international film shoots. This is why, in terms of security, we immediately put in place Anglo-Saxon standards. » The site should be operational in 2026 and could generate 2,000 direct jobs.

Second file: France.tv studio will invest 30 million euros in the extension, planned for 2025, of 4,000 m2 of its studios in Vendargues, 17 kilometers northeast of Montpellier. For the moment, they employ more than 200 people in 60 professions, but employ more than 1,000 including intermittent workers, and without even talking about induced jobs. Christophe Tardieu, general secretary of the France Télévisions group, specifies that his group already produces twenty minutes per day in Vendargues: “It’s colossal. We need this extension for us and to accommodate other filming. And we proposed to the three largest French film producers, Gaumont, Pathé and UGC, to partner with us on the Hérault site. »

The audiovisual group also bought two Montpellier companies this summer, which complete its offering: the animation studio Dwarf Animation and, more recently, Les Tontons truqueurs, a company specializing in special effects.

Ecosystème local favorable

The State supports the projects of GGL and France Télévisions, which were, in the spring, winners of “The great factory of the image”, the part of the France 2030 recovery plan devoted to filming, digital production and training in image professions.
