Audit Finds “Quality, Compliance and Safety”
The expert’s report paints a largely positive picture of the Pain Assessment and Treatment Center, characterizing it as a dynamic and collaborative surroundings. According to the report,the center “demonstrates great dynamism with a united multi-professional and multi-disciplinary team.” It explicitly confirms that the center adheres to the standards set by hospital administration,encompassing clinical activity – including both outpatient consultations and day hospital stays – and also teaching and research initiatives.
The audit also highlighted the center’s integrated approach to patient care,noting its collaboration with departments specializing in palliative medicine,anesthesia-resuscitation,and interventional algology. This cross-functional operation, the report states, ensures a comprehensive and holistic approach to pain management.
Examining the Cases of Abossolo and Giniès
The audit addressed specific concerns raised about the practices of Doctors Abossolo and Giniès. regarding Doctor Olivier Abossolo, the report found that concerns about his methods were “rarely mentioned by health professionals.” It noted that he maintained a limited schedule – two and a half days per week – focusing on mindfulness meditation and aromatherapy. While he expressed interest in expanding non-pharmacological treatments, these were not formally approved by the team.
The analysis of Doctor Patrick Giniès’s conduct was more nuanced. The report indicated that his “enthusiasm to communicate a lot about chronic pain” and statements made in interviews were perceived by some as deviating from established practices. Though,the expert acknowledged that effective pain management requires a “bio-psycho-social approach,” demanding in-depth understanding of each patient’s unique circumstances.
Recognized as “one of the precursors of pain medicine in France” and “respected by his peers,” Doctor giniès was nevertheless advised to exercise greater caution in his public communications. The audit concluded that he “probably needs to rethink its disruptive speech,” emphasizing the need to avoid potential misinterpretations of his ideas.
Recommendations for the Future
The audit resulted in three key recommendations aimed at strengthening the center’s operations and public image. The expert advised reviewing the service’s name – currently “Integrative Medicine and Psychosomatics Unit” – due to its potential association with the controversial video. Additionally, the report called for the growth of an “operating charter” to serve as a foundational document for staff and students, as well as a “patient information document” to clearly explain the center’s bio-psycho-social approach to pain management.
Montpellier University Hospital has confirmed that these recommendations are being implemented. Moreover, the hospital reported filing a report with the Interministerial Mission for Vigilance and the Fight against Sectarian Abuses regarding Doctor Abossolo, who has as left the institution. Doctor Giniès has been reinstated following his precautionary suspension.
