Marcela, 26, lives in the heart of the Ecuadorian Sierra, in the Chimbo canton of the Bolívar province. She is expecting her first child and she learned about the “Minga for a Childhood with a Future” initiative, an initiative led by the Technical Secretariat Ecuador Grows without Child Malnutrition.

The support of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES), and the General Directorate of Civil Registry, Identification and Identification in this activity adds efforts and actions that respond to the national objective of preventing and reducing Child Chronic Malnutrition (DCI) in Ecuador.

In the “Minga for a Childhood with a Future”, the MSP staff carried out preventive controls for children under 2 years of age, took and recorded anthropometric measurements and nutritional counseling for families. Preventive controls for pregnant women were also developed and the importance of caring for and taking the Comprehensive Health Book (LIS) to each control was disseminated.

In addition, the MSP teams verified that both pregnant women and infants have received the necessary vaccines and micronutrient supplements for pregnancy and development, respectively. For example, 18-month-old Jaime was one of the 8 children who received micronutrients in the Otavalo canton.

The stories of Marcela and Jaime are two of the many that were lived during the first phase of the “Minga for a Childhood with a Future” that took place in 28 cantons of the northern and central highlands of the country, in the provinces of Imbabura, Pichincha , Cotopaxi, Tungurahua and Bolívar, from April 14 to Sunday May 7. In total, the health team provided care to more than 1,820 people in the cantons where this initiative was carried out.

The “Minga for a Childhood with a Future” had the participation of more than 5,000 people and it is expected that the initiative will be replicated in other provinces of the country to guarantee timely attention to pregnant women and children under two years of age.
