Military Service in Latvia
Grauze reports that 111 young people opted for the soldier profession, and 90% of them evaluated their service positively. Some servicemen have also used the opportunity to pursue university studies.
Colonel Guntars Strazditis, from the National Armed Forces, highlighted the effectiveness and ongoing development of the service. He suggested legislative adjustments to enhance discipline and infrastructure improvements.
The first voluntary enlistment period ran from July 1 to May 31, 2023, while the inaugural random selection of candidates for national defense service took place on January 23, 2023.
Citizens are encouraged to volunteer for future conscriptions. In certain situations, individuals between the ages of 18 and 19 may be randomly called up if necessary.
Voluntary soldiers receive monthly compensation of 600 euros, with an additional payment of 1,100 euros upon completion of their service. The total compensation for voluntary soldiers is 7,700 euros. Compulsory conscripts receive a lower compensation.
