Moroccan Sahara: Spain’s support for the Moroccan autonomy plan reflects a “political and strategic commitment” (Moratinos)
Madrid – The support of the Spanish government for the autonomy plan, proposed by Morocco to resolve the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, illustrates an “important political and strategic commitment”, affirmed, Friday in Madrid, the High Representative of the United Nations for the Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Angel Moratinos.
“I support and defend the position of the Spanish government on the Sahara. This is an important political and strategic commitment of Spain,” said Mr. Moratinos, former head of Spanish diplomacy, who was the guest of a meeting organized by Nueva Economía Fórum, a leading debate platform in Spain.
“I am very proud that the Spanish government has taken this important decision which also constitutes a step forward,” he noted, assuring that “all of Spain must understand this wise decision”.
Mr. Moratinos also highlighted the importance of the ties uniting Spain and Morocco, welcoming the decision to jointly organize, with Portugal, the 2030 World Cup.
“For us, the relationship with Morocco is not only a neighborly relationship. It is a strategic relationship,” he maintained, specifying that relations with Morocco are “fundamental” and “vital”.
Morocco and Spain will be the center of gravity of relations between Africa, the Mediterranean and Europe in the 21st century, concluded Mr. Moratinos.
