Morocco is represented at this event by a delegation led by the Director of Global Issues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Ismaël Chekouri.
Chaired by the Head of State of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the opening session of the conference took place in the presence of the Presidents of Ghana and Togo, as well as the President of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.
The conference, attended by United Nations Member States, is organized by the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in partnership with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).
The main concept of the meeting is based on the discussions of the Ministerial Meeting of African Member States which was co-hosted by the Government of Nigeria and UNOCT on September 21, 2023, on the sidelines of the 78th High Level Week. session of the United Nations General Assembly.
This two-day meeting brings together approximately 32 African countries, represented at ministerial and national security advisor levels, that have successfully countered terrorism and violent extremism, as well as representatives of African regional organizations, partners international organizations, entities of the United Nations Global Counterterrorism Coordination Compact and civil society partners, for an exchange on how to address the evolving terrorist threat in Africa.
The aim of the meeting is to strengthen multilateral counterterrorism cooperation and reshape the international community’s collective response to terrorism in Africa, while emphasizing the importance of African country-led and African-led solutions.
By addressing issues of regional security and stability in an inclusive manner, the meeting aims to strengthen multilateralism, contributing to the Future Summit scheduled for September 2024 and the formulation of a “Pact for the Future” oriented towards the action.
