Rabat, 30/04/2024
– The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita, reiterated, Tuesday in Rabat, Morocco’s commitment to succeed in the electoral processes in Africa.
The Kingdom is predisposed to providing Africa with qualified election observers capable of promoting the democratic process in the African continent, underlined Mr. Bourita at the opening of the third edition of the Specialized Training Cycle for African Election Observers .
This training, continues Mr. Bourita, should provide Africa with quality observers in order to support and give credibility to the electoral processes on the continent, recalling in this regard the speech delivered by HM King Mohammed VI before the 28th summit of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, in which the Sovereign stressed that “Africa can and must validate its electoral processes itself, and thus guarantee the free choice of its citizens”.
“Africa has the regulatory tools and judicial institutions, such as the Constitutional Councils and the Supreme Courts, capable of resolving disputes and electoral appeals,” indicated His Majesty the King in this speech.
Some 74 participants from 45 African countries are taking part in this training cycle for African election observers, said Mr. Bourita, who co-chaired this event with Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner for Political Affairs and Peace. and the Security of the African Union.
In this sense, he emphasized “the interest and relevance of this exercise”, particularly among women and young people who constitute 50% of the participants, which is “a very promising sign”, especially since 2024 is an election year in Africa with 19 elections expected, including eleven presidential elections.
Morocco is organizing until May 3 in Rabat, in partnership with the African Union Commission, the third edition of the Specialized Training Cycle for African election observers.
Note that the Kingdom is the first African country to train election observers in Africa. With this third successive edition, the training cycles benefited 155 African observers, making it possible to develop a continent-wide database.
The training cycle for electoral observers is part of Morocco’s commitment, under the enlightened leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, to achieve strategic objectives aimed at consolidating democratic governance and practice in Africa, for a stable, peaceful and prosperous continent.
It also responds to calls from the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, notably the last Summit of the Union, held in February 2024, to Morocco to continue strengthening African capacities for improving the professional conduct of election observation missions.
