Memory, feeling, history, experimentation: these are the words that have marked Christian Boltanski, died at the age of 76 a Paris, where he was born on 6 September 1944, one of the greatest contemporary French artists, certainly one of the most famous. Born in Paris to a father of Ukrainian origin and a Corsican mother, he was the brother of the sociologist Luc Boltanski. He taught at the National Higher School of Fine Arts in Paris and lived in Malakoff, in the Île-de-France region, with his wife Annette Messager, also an artist, with whom he occasionally collaborated. Boltanski was best known for his art installations, although he liked to call himself a painter. His artistic work was pervaded by the theme of death, memory and loss, for this reason there were numerous creations of memorials of the anonymous and of those who have disappeared. His permanent installation at the Museum for the Memory of Ustica in Bologna that surrounds the remains of the DC9 shot down on June 27, 1980.
